Have Modern VST Instruments Replaced Your Hardware Synths ?
no.
they allow me working on my tracks when i'm away from my hardware.
but i would never gig with laptop, like everyone did back in 2000s. (ok, unless one of my grooveboxes suddenly fails/dies right at the venue).

Yes, yes they have. Since around 2005 onwards. Controller + VST > hardware since then.

BONES wrote: Tue Oct 26, 2021 6:25 am Really? So drag 'n' drop then, like the best VSTi? Because to me it just looks like a shit version of the Mod Matrix in Sugar-Bytes' Factory, which isn't even close to the best mod matrix available in a VSTi.
You're a no nothing fool. A hardware interface for a complex modulation matrix will almost always beat out the mod sources and destinations displayed on some shitty panel of a VSTi GUI.
BONES wrote: Tue Oct 26, 2021 6:25 am If that's true, then Waldorf have done a really shit job in their promo videos because it all sounds rather thin to me. I mean, how good can it be when it maxes out at 2 oscillators x 8 voices? It's never going to be able to compete with DUNE's 32 waveforms per oscillator x 2 oscillators x 16 voices, is it? It just can't, end of story. Money wasted. And when I say "money", I mean a lot of money because that ugly little thing costs more than my entire set-up - my laptop, all the music software on it and all the hardware and peripherals I have.
The MicroWave I and M are monster synths that dump all over the feeble Dune 3. If you want super hi-fi, Trance-wanna-be sounds, there are far superior options (both hardware and software) than Dune.
BONES wrote: Tue Oct 26, 2021 6:25 am And let's be clear here - M might have analogue VCF/VCA but that just makes it like my Rocket, which cost 1/10th as much. That's ONE-TENTH! The oscillators are pure software, just like any wavetable VSTi, from Vital to Serum or DUNE. It's 50% more than Korg's lovingly crafted recreation of the ARP2600, which everyone complains is way over-priced. At least I can see the appeal of throwing money at something like the ARP2600 but the M would need to be half the price they are asking before it would even begin to make sense.
Well then, the M is not for you. You are simply incapable of recognizing sonic brilliance and will be left to diddle with your Rocket.

Partly. I don't like the action of the keys on vst's though. :hihi:

My hardware synths replaced 26472928364 plugins (99.9% of those are not even installed anymore) except Massive X which I'm still using for SFX.

And hardware Odyssey is still way better than plugin :P That filter is mmm!

I don't own much hardware in the first place. And my Cobalt 8X is kind of an elaborate VST in the box as well :D

Cobalt8X is so pleasant to play! A very well-thought-out instrument when it comes to features and UX. Oscillators are very musical - not that great for experimental music lovers but I'm not one of them.
I just wish to have 4 more modulation slots because it's not enough to use for a few LFO assignments + 4 directions of Joystick.

While Cobalt can be seen as a plugin in a box, it's way more fun to play than a plugin.

Such a key point- is it fun, do you enjoy it, how does it make you feel....

My Hydrasynth is 100% digital, but amazing feel, sounds, poly AT, a ribbon, great UX...I connect to it in a way I just don't with anything virtual (despite the quite pleasant experience when using NKS stuff with my MK2 S49 Keyboard).
X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

No. My home computer is hardware and my six controllers (hopefully soon to be seven) for it are hardware.
My studio computers and five keyboards, one drum machine, four rack modules and three controllers are hardware.

Even if I'm eventually reduced to what I keep on hand at home, the hardware is a necessity to complete the connection.
I'm' just not patient enough to input by mouse and keypad. But aren't they, along with the computer itself, hardware too?

The space and cabling thing is the main argument against HW for me. I had to spend about $120 on (budget) cables for the $1500 worth of pedals I bought last week. Then there's the space thing, as my $1500 digital sampler takes up a ridiculous amount of space. Though there really isn't a software equivalent for it. You can buy an official remake for it, from Dave Rossum for a mere $4k
There's the money thing too of course...

bloody hell!
how many cables did 3 or 4 pedals need to hit 120??? or do you guys get stiffed on pedal patch cables? i get boss ones, 2 or 3 quid each.

although i do agree, hate buying cables, they're boring.
if im ordering cables im buying at least another module or pedal, so the package is exciting enough to get out of bed for

Heh, well I like them to match and I had to get some different lengths :) I am actually up to
10 pedals now, tho 3 are still in the mail or whatever...

ah ive missed a few purchases there then :tu:

im not so fussed about matching, although most of my pedal patch cables are the same, but ive needed a few longer ones too, and they dont match, but doesnt bother me.
i know a few people are like that with modular cables too, even down to the same colour!!
it can be confusing enough without doing that!! :o

Yeah they are all color coded, which requires 2 sets if you want to color code the connections
for stereo. Other than that, my only requirements were right angle connectors and value
packs of 6 or more. Also I needed a few stereo splitters, 1/8 adapters and some 1 ft midi cables.
All that stuff adds up sadly...

Post

ah yeah :dog: strymon, forgot about additional midi.
