Many of us are heavily invested in Cubase, some have used the sequencer for three decades, or more. It's quite a shock to discover we are about to become dependant upon a connection to another computer in order for our software to function. This is not a situation I could have anticipated.

One of the fundamental rules of DAW hygiene is: no internet. I have observed this rule since the days of dialup modems and, to date, have not suffered a single malware issue. I intend to keep it this way.

I understand such a rule will be an anathema to younger people, but, to an old fella whose livelihood continues to depend on software tools, it's a rule I will not break.
Hey, I'm old too! Started with Pro24...

And as a fellow oldie, I don't agree with you at all, but Steinberg have thought of you. Is one offline update per year really the end of the musical world?

Hahaha. Seriously? The paranoia runs high with this one. Not good, nor healthy, dude.. honestly. I'll try to ignore you as best I can, but I can only wonder WTF is wrong. Either way, learn better ways to cope with your annoyance because someone called you out for your ridiculous language towards people, including myself. Also, stop addressing me, whether direct or indirect, unless it's directly about the topic. Thank you.

Large professional studios do have Internet connection ... and backup via the network and even use cloudservices.

You can have a secure and stable environment while having an Internet connection - OFCOURSE.

Bedroom studio users with a lot of cracked software are the ones wanting no Internet connection while using their pirated software....... for obvious reasons.

I have always had an Internet connection to my personal DAW since the 90's and also in shared studios... it was never a problem.
You dont even need CPU intensive antivirus or software firewalls. Its all about basic IT knowledge....

Still no answer on whether you use Steinberg products then. So, my guess stands: You don't.

Where are the moderators ?
Three of my posts suggesting things were getting slightly ludicrous were removed, while all of the vitriol stayed happily intact.
Oh, right. I must of missed those. The only posts I ever find ludicrous are the sort of posts that have zero to do with the thread they are posted in and are seriously off topic. And this thread is full of those.

Just a quick burn of that strawman.
I have no cracked software, do not pirate, and prefer to have as much disconnect from internet as I can achieve.
And there's a difference between "stable" and optimized.

WTF. Yes, I do. I use it on 3 different systems, though I tend to hang back a version or two. I own "most" of Steinberg's products, and qualify for a free upgrade to 12 btw. What else would you like to know? Are you asking for a picture of my dongle?

I honestly dunno where you get some of your ideas from. Please chill out..

Post

Isn't it a illegal to to send pictures of your dongle over the internet? :hihi:

Chill out, he says. After pages of angry mega posts about how shitty Steinberg is.

You realize how weird that sounds?

Seriously, if I would be so pissed off about a company, I wouldn't buy their products anymore. I'm no masochist though, so, maybe that's why.

If you choose to fly by the seat of your pants, that's your business.

I have dependants, therefore I reduce variables and minimize risk to the nth degree. This is why I choose software that is under my control.

Currently I have a choice. If Steinberg pushes ahead with its plans I lose that choice. If I want to retain the choice I must lose the software in which I've invested for decades. This is why I'm rather miffed.
eh?

Wow, this thread descended quickly.

Personally, I don't think a new activation system is anything to worry about.

I also took the grace period for v12 as a good time to upgrade to v11.

I guess the worst thing about a once a month internet snoop is that it will require agreeing to a licence before installation. How many people are going to wade through pages of legal jargon to see what they are agreeing to? And while Steinberg are a very reputable company who can be trusted, it still involves opening up a potentail security threat that criminals will try to exploit. For someone who uses there computer to do everything with including banking its something to think over.

Post

Steinberg already insists on taking some of your data, via their download program. What more will they insist upon?
How will changes to the hardware affect the licence?
What about all the other Steinberg products (of which I have more than a few)?
What if I can't afford to pay my broadband bill because covid has forced me out of work?
