Setting MIDI channel to "any" ?

Documentation states:

When recording from a midi input device, you can select the device and change its channel property, which will manually set the channel number given to newly recorded clips that it creates. If this number is set to 'any', it will use the channel number from any incoming midi messages it receives.

I have been set channel to any, but Tracktion does not store the setting, it will be (none) again. The same situation when I'm trying play back, I set the output channel to any, but '1' remains.

So I have this multichannel MIDI track and I can't play back, Tracktion sends data only to the channel 1.

Or there are a possibility in Tracktion to "unpack" multiple channel track to separate single channel tracks?

Any suggestions?

Any ideas?

Please try out to set to "any" the MIDI channel of a MIDI input "icon". Anybody could do it? My Tracktion write "none" back to this field inmediately.

Anyway, if I try record all channels separate how can I assign a midi input device to more tracks? For example Synth1 to Track1 with channel1, Synth1 to Track2 with channel2, etc....

Tracktion won't unpack a multichannel clip into multiple single-channel clips. You CAN do it manually, but that's a pain in the ass.

If you're importing existing MIDI files, separating channels manually is your only option. If you're sending multichannel MIDI data into Tracktion from an external sequencer, you have two options:

1) Export each channel of your arrangement as a separate file, then import those into Tracktion; or

2) Use a workaround that involves two free programs, MIDIOX and MIDI Yoke, that can be configured to turn a single physical MIDI input into 8 virtual MIDI outputs. When you open Tracktion, you then see 8 MIDI input icons that you can assign to different tracks.

The workaround is kind of annoying and complicated and only works for 8 channels. However, it does work.

I myself was using an external sequencer, but eventually discovered that Tracktion could do what I needed, which "fixed" this problem. That may or may not work for you.

Use Niall Gs lovely NDC plug in pack - put the MIDI chanelliser plug in in front of the vstI you want to use and set the MIDI channel to the one you want. very simple, very nice.

go to http://www.niallmoody.com/ndcplugs/ and download the NDC midi file.

there are a number of different plug ins - I particularly like the transposer. great if you need to put your midi song in a different key but don't want to go to the hassle of selecting the notes in each midi ckip and transposing them!

hope this is an answer to your probs

for MIDI files you need to make sure that they are in format 1 - T will load these midi files into separate tracks - try MID convertor, downloadable here

I didn't know that about MIDI files and T... interesting...

Niall's plugs are lovely, but they don't fix the fact that once Tracktion records a MIDI clip, all the notes in that clip can only play on one channel.

if you're sending multichannel MIDI into Tracktion, all your synths will play fine with Channelisers, but once you try to record your MIDI info, you'll get one clip that can only play on one channel.

Krylenko,

Ah I see what you mean - MIDI signals can only be output to one MIDI channel from any one T track. yep, I guess that's about right and I don't know any way around that one!

end of story, I guess!

an ugly-assed work-around would be to use one of the MIDI recorder plugs, and save the MIDI out as multi-channel.

Tracktion 2 really needs ghostable MIDI inputs, let's hope we get them.
