I'm not too impressed with TAIP. The only models that really feel like tape to me are IK and UAD. The others just sound like saturation plugins.ThomC wrote: Sat Nov 20, 2021 4:35 pm So what do you guys think about TAIP? Any good to your ears? Have you tried it out?
My preference still goes to IK's Tape Collection when it comes to smoothness, dynamics, rounding off the edges and adding that extra (brace yourselves for the buzzword) 'warmth' on the mix buss. But as an effect and on instrument busses, TAIP is actually really useful. Love it on drums so far, the drive control is super satisfying to work with (there's a slight pleasing visual latency going on).
AND... It doesn't kill your CPU. IK's Collection kind of does. They both have their merits and a very distinct sound in my opinion.

IK's Tape Collection is definitely in a league of its own in my opinion. I wouldn't say that TAIP is just a saturation plugin as it does more than that (dynamically, frequency-wise, in terms of modulation and harmonically), but yes, using the Tape Collection on the master buss feels great pretty much every time.jamcat wrote: Sat Nov 20, 2021 8:49 pm I'm not too impressed with TAIP. Have you tried Hornet's Tape plugin? and Sender Spike's free SN03?
Sender Spike : https://senderspike.wordpress.com/2019/ ... -recorder/
Hornet : https://www.hornetplugins.com/plugins/hornet-tape/
The free FerricTDS MKII is pretty impressive too : https://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/20 ... -released/

I'm just talking about these plugins on a gut level.
Did you see the Solo movie?
When you're watching it, you're trying to make the connection with Han Solo, but it just never clicks. It's kind of like that. IK and UAD feel like Harrison Ford. TAIP and others feel like Alden Ehrenreich.
I'm not even going to bother with those free plugins because they are Windows only.

Edit: jamcat explains, thank you
IK's collection is / they are my favorite to-tape style effect of that style, the original 4 tape emulations prior to the more recent ones which I haven't tried yet. I do like Warble from NEOLD also but not for the same thing, it doesn't seem like it has the same kind of glue but I do like its character as an effect where it really excels and its general coloration also is nice.
I haven't tried TAIP but I have liked some other stuff I've used from Baby Audio. Hrm, I don't think it's really "tape" as such but SPL Iron has a "tape rolloff" switch on its comp that I think can sound good on some sources
I'm pretty new to using tape stuff to be honest and it hasn't made it into my workflow for every track yet, but I have enjoyed the slight coloration and gelling that I got in a recent track from the IK tape I used.

IK's is a combination of dynamic convolution and algorithmic modeling.
I believe UAD uses convolution and modeling as well.

If IKM Tapes would use just a static IR then CPU usage would be below 1%. There's way more stuff happening under it. I don't know if it sounds like a real reel2reel, but it's the only tape plugin that is enhancing my tracks, not degrading like majority of other tape emulations.Ploki wrote: Sun Nov 21, 2021 3:15 am IK is IR-based, how IR based stuff could sound like tape eludes me.
Satin is imo still the most authentic, but TAIP is decent. Past 15% it becomes exaggerated but still
