I have been trying to decide between Ashbory or various U-bass options and went for this:

I could see myself winding up with two or three though. I like fretless but do want to try fretted, and various string types have their pros and cons -- this one comes strung with Kala round-wounds which are better for some techniques, but I like the more mellow sound of Aquila Thunderblack for an almost upright bass sound. But we'll see how I like one instrument first before I get into all of that...

I live in Hawaii and never owned an ukulele. My buddy has a handmade $2000-ish one. To me they dont have enough strings, bass or reg.

I picked up a Heritage Audio BabyRAM monitor controller. It's great being able to switch between my Genelecs and grotbox monitor, and having a volume control, mute, mono & dim switches on my desktop

To me guitars have too many strings and weirdly inconsistent intervals between them. I have both a mandolin and a tenor uke and learned some basic chords on them, but really just for chuckles.

My first stringed instrument was violin. It's been years since I played one but still, my brain is wired for a narrow neck, 4 strings, consistent intervals, almost no worrying about chords (maybe "double stop" fifths once in a while), and no frets.

Fretless bass is kind of fun but too big, so I think U-bass is going to suit me really well. I can imagine using it sometimes in my "serious" music as well as just having something else to jam with.

Not that I have anything against them, just never been interested. For the Hawaiian music, I
use the guitar, which is how it's done pretty much. To me an ukulele is tantamount to a recorder
you would play in 3rd grade music class. All the slack key tunings and traditional Hawaiian music
is written for the guitar. Surprisingly little of that has been written with the uke in mind,
though many will translate for it, which to me it's impossible to do because it's not correct.

TBH I never even knew the was such a thing as a bass ukulele. 8 stings sure, never seen anyone
use a bass uke. I have been interested in the upright bass, or an electric for recording purposes,
that's about it. The violin on the other hand is definitely something I have wanted for a long time,
but never actually acquired, same with the mandolin. In the end, there's no way I can own all
the instruments I would like, as I wouldn't be able to move around in my place since every nook
and cranny would be occupied.

*btw: In Hawaii, they actually will give you an ukulele to play in 3rd grade music class...
