I am trying to replace my Access Virus TI that doesn't work on my new machine, so I already bought plugins like Omnisphere 2, Serum and Spire. (Diva, Hive and Dune 3 did not go on sale, so I did not buy them yet. But will do it as soon as they go on sale).

Is Nexus 4 a great addition to this collection of plugins to try to replace an Access Virus TI? Or should I simply avoid it like many people have said already.
Do you really need all those synths just to replace a Virus TI? Seems like massive overkill..

Manuel Schleis, who does sounds for Nexus and Avenger, reportedly has the following in his studio:

Access Virus C
Access Virus TI KB

Alesis Andromeda A6
Alesis Quadrasynth Plus
Casio VZ-10M
Clavia Nordlead III
E-Mu
Emu Morpheus
Emu Xtreme Lead-1
Novation Supernova II KB
Oberheim Matrix-1000
Quasimidi Technox
FantomX
JD 990
JP 8000
Korg Microkorg XL
JV 1080
MC-505
VSynth
Yamaha Cs6r incl. AN1x
Yamaha FS1
Yamaha Cs2x
Yamaha W7
Waldorf Micro Q
Waldorf Pulse
Korg 05R/W

On a quick skim, I see a few Virus VA-Shapes in the Avenger library. If you want flexibility in choosing various samples/VA-shapes, etc.. to make your own presets, Avenger is the way to go, IMO.

Bla28 said he already has Omnisphere 2, Serum and Spire! Bloody hell.. Omnisphere alone is enough ground to cover to replace a Virus TI.. I bet even Serum could cover that alone.

If you’re not a sound designer and are solely at the mercy of presets that others make, then yes.. you can go down a long winded road of purchasing plugins for their presets or 3rd party preset banks.

But if that’s the case then you would be doing yourself a massive favor learning to make your own patches. After a year or two you start to realize that one capable synth can get you there 98% of the way and you don’t need tons of stuff.

To be honest, I don't understand what the big deal is. These plugins don't cost that much (for me atleast), so it is not that big of a deal. And I don't mind supporting developers that make plugins that are compatible with my 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro (so that other developers will also do it). It is not that I am starving so to say :)

I just simply buy the plugins that people have recommend to me. Is it overkill? I don't know, we shall see.

Merry Xmas to everyone btw.

Well.. you asked for input on the matter :hihi: But to circle back to your specific question: "Will Nexus 4 be a great addition to this collection of plugins to try to replace an Access Virus TI?" In my opinion: No, based on what you have, Nexus will not add that much more.

Ok thanks, Nexus is removed from my shopping list.

All remains is Diva and Dune 3 to go on sale and then I should be done.

tony10000 wrote: Fri Dec 24, 2021 6:09 am I think they are different tools for different tasks. I use Nexus because it has a wide range of sounds and I have favorited the ones I like and they are instantly searchable available. Avenger for me is more of a sound design tool, although I have purchased a small number of packs for the kinds of sounds I am interested in.
Aside from Hollywood expansions (except the new Piano one), what type of sounds does Nexus offer that Avenger does not?

I think I've listened to every expansion demos for both Nexus and Avenger and struggle to hear any instrumental advantage of Nexus over Avenger, except as noted above. But I ask above because maybe I missed something.
Avenger is a bit slower for that purpose and you have to search for sounds by pack rather in a unified interface.
You can search all packs and search by sound type (example: arp) and have a list of tags underneath to quickly narrow down the sound search. To do this, click the CONTENT tab on the left panel, then click the magnifying glass icon (by "CAT" and "FAV") just under the "CONTENT" "INFO" "FILES" tabs.
OK...good to know! Thanks!

So I've done more comparison of Nexus and Avenger and actually do perceive some difference in sound. For those who own both, do you hear that Nexus tends to sound more spacious/wider and cleaner? Whereas Avenger tends to sound more focused/narrow and grittier/darker?

Anybody who has designed sounds with Nexus engine confirm if there's some universally applied stereo separation in Nexus?

This doesn't mean Avenger can't sound like Nexus, as there are some presets I've come across Avenger presets that sound pretty wide and clean - but for the vast majority of presets, I can't help but notice there is some difference. Not sure if this is entirely sound design related or sound engine related.

Post

I doubt that there are that many differences in sound. I suspect a lot of Nexus sound design is done in Avenger as it has NEXUS filters.

In continuation with this discussion on "sound", I wonder if there are any producers that use Nexus for non-EDM/house/techno stuff and still make the tracks sound convincing. I mean the presets of instruments like guitars, piano, etc. in Nexus sound good but not necessarily realistic sounding, so would you still use them in a alt/pop/r&b context? Of course, one could choose something else other than Nexus, but that's not the point. Is there any video demonstrating the use of Nexus outside of its real strength to good effect?

Post

I have mentioned this before, I have two friends here in Jamaica who were using Nexus for Dancehall and reggae. I don't think one is still doing so, but for sure the other one is, and he indeed is one of the top Reggae and Dancehall producers locally, and Nexus is his go to sound source.

I really don’t get all this ‘synth a sounds thinner than synth b and not as wide as synth c.’
It’s all about processing sounds in the mix and getting them sounding how you want them.

@the OP. Nexus is a superb synth (even if it is ‘only’ a rompler) and there are hundreds of ready to go sounds out the box. One of my go to’s 👍
I wonder what happens if I press this button...

Is there even any difference? I had nexus 3 and i don’t see anything new on N4
