freezing tracks

when i freeze tracks, what exactly is happening?

i notice that if i export vst instruments at 24 bit at 96khz or whatever, the sound is A LOT better (at least it was with cubase.. should it be with tracktion too?)

so if i freeze tracks when im using the 44100 hz sample rate (btw: how do i know if im in 16bit or 24bit?), when i do a mixdown, do they change to 24 bit?

so basically my hope is that you'll tell me i can be freezing tracks at 44.1khz and still get 96khz quality when i mixdown (and not have to unfreeze tracks, which would obviously make my system take a crap.. if i've got tons of instruments running).
