That's why CLAP is something we need:
CLAP is open-source, it's simple, it's free for all and there are no unfair licensing conditions.
- The 'big' DAWs did get so popular since we Indy developers did create great content for their platform.
- Steinberg/Apple is a big commercial enterprise with a dominant market position. Their goal is to get a financial advantage, and they want to keep the competition away.
- Steinberg's/Apple's plugin standard is not open-source. By using licensing contracts and by defining interface standards they can control the market.
- By owning and frequently changing an important interface-standard Steinberg can keep competing DAW- and plugin-developers busy and always one step behind.
- After more than a decade VST3 still has not replaced VST2.
- We Indy developers need to pay money to Apple to be allowed to distribute software on their platform (you need a certificate). They also take away rater big fees when you use the App store for software distribution (it was around 30% and recently has been lowered).

Oh sure, that’s just what working musicians need right now. Yet another format to wait on developers yet another decade to support.
Meanwhile, in the real world, most of us are still waiting on developers to update their plugins for 64-bit/VST3/M1. You know, to work with the actual computers and DAWs we use.
Focus your limited development resources on that, not something that will never be a thing.

With that attitude the electric car would never have seen the light of the day.jamcat wrote: Wed Dec 29, 2021 7:18 pm Oh sure, that’s just what working musicians need right now. Yet another format to wait on developers yet another decade to support.![]()

Neither are dominant in their respective markets. Allowing your competition to freely incorporate and develop for your platform isn’t the way to keep competition away.Markus Krause wrote: Wed Dec 29, 2021 4:41 pm [*] Steinberg/Apple is a big commercial enterprise with a dominant market position. This all sounds a bit paranoid. Steinberg created an automatable open format that anyone could support for free in 1996 because it was badly needed, and we’ve all benefitted from it for 25 years. Independent developers particularly. You wouldn’t have a company were it not for evil Steinberg.Markus Krause wrote: Wed Dec 29, 2021 4:41 pm [*] Steinberg's/Apple's plugin standard is not open-source. This is a joke, right? Cubase isn’t one step ahead of anyone.Markus Krause wrote: Wed Dec 29, 2021 4:41 pm [*] By owning and frequently changing an important interface-standard Steinberg can keep competing DAW- and plugin-developers busy and always one step behind.
And you think that yet another plugin format would be the solution to fragmentation?Markus Krause wrote: Wed Dec 29, 2021 4:41 pm [*] After more than a decade VST3 still has not replaced VST2.
No one forced you to do that. You pay the money because you make money. If it wasn’t profitable you wouldn’t do it. You can throw it all away and just develop CLAP plugins for Linux if you want. But then you would be a hobbyist, not a professional developer.Markus Krause wrote: Wed Dec 29, 2021 4:41 pm [*] We Indy developers need to pay money to Apple to be allowed to distribute software on their platform (you need a certificate). That sounds like a very poor allocation of resources with zero upside and no ROI for your company from a business standpoint, if you ask me. But you do you.Markus Krause wrote: Wed Dec 29, 2021 4:41 pm We plan to support the new format (CLAP) and will collaborate with U-he and the other companies involved to establish it.

Again, also, in case this hasn't sunk in yet or maybe people haven't understood the concept: CLAP is designed to speed up VST3 development for developers and minimise common issues. So, what's not to like about that?

I'd say a bigger potential issue with this name choice is that it might not be very googleable.. but you'll [edit: fixed, I don't see myself living long enough to see anything] see what happens.Urs wrote: Wed Dec 29, 2021 8:33 pm Yeah, as I said elsewhere, the Clap jokes typically die after two or three days.
