<rant source="curmudgeonly old coot" note="get off my lawn">
As someone who requires modern medicine to stay alive, I take issue with the notion that life would be "better" without a thriving society. Things were not better "in the old days," and to my mind it's flaunting one's privilege to pretend they were. :-\
</rant>
The question is not well-posed (sorry, not sorry), so I will answer a variation on it:
What's the simplest studio set up you could be satisfied with for a full year of music production?
For my needs, I would require a drum machine, a source of ambient / atmospheric soundscapes, a versatile analog or VA synth, and an unabashedly digital one, most certainly a wavetable synth. I don't think I would be satisfied with less than that.
My current picks would be Roland System-8, Spire, Maschine (with a custom load of 10 hand-picked kits), and ... Straylight.
Second choice for each:
Modal Cobalt8, PPG Wave 3.V, Elektron RYTM, and Softube Parallels.
...or maybe Pigments instead of Parallels.
GORRAMMIT! DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE.

Does this "desert island" also include other musicians with their "desert island" setups?
That could change it dramatically.
As a thought experiment, these can be a little insightful. But to really put some thought into it, I make it into different scenarios.
Such as:
If a judge ordered by current law (e.g. re: tax, bankruptcy, divorce, etc.) - that they were taking everything to liquidate and would only allow you one DAW, one plugin, what would you be be left with?
(Taking into consideration they legally can't take your NFRs and free collections. And which of those would you regularly keep using before rebuilding?)
Or:
If you were reduced to a nomadic couch-surfer and had to use computers as you crossed paths with them, what would be on your portable drive to be able to facilitate those precious moments of composition/production?

Well, since we are talking desert island, I am actually going full desert island here. No power. Trapped like a rat.
probably some coconut shells for percussion, some type of flute I could carve, and whatever weird xylophone type instrument I could make out of whatever I could scavenge for it. if I could find the right type of strong vine or whatever, attempt to make a sorry string instrument of some type.
Fish Skeleton mouth harp, too. A couple island women for backup vocals and we're good to go

I really recommend the Elektron Digitakt for this. Its case has a really nice resonance to it when you bang it with sticks, and the clicky keys make a pleasant hi-hat-like sound when you push on them. You can also bang the whole thing on a flat rock for something like a kick.

I'm fine with that as a minimal setup.

My setup would probably not change much at all. I don’t think I have any plugins that need authorization beyond installation.
