mxxx random modulator question

Hi everyone,

the random modulator inside Mxxx utilities behave in a strange way.

Normally, when the smooth knob is all the way down, the designed control will jump randomly from one value to another and the more you increase the amount of the smooth knob the more the transition between each value will be smoother .

However, I've noticed no matter how i set smooth, the variations between values are always smooth.
I thought that it has something to do with the kind of mode ( that you can choose just above the speed and smooth knob ) but when you set the value will jump only between the max and min value designed in the modulator parameters.

i'm quite lost with it, is that normal or there is something that I've missed ?

Well, the random jumps are for the "steps" mode (or stairs? don't remember ). The normal mode smoothens it out but with smoothness 0% there are abrupt changes in direction, which 100% smoothens the "direction" too (2rd derivative smoothing haha, not sure if that helps ).

If i understood well, the step mode seem to produce the same behavior as the 0% smoothness that we found inside MSF pervoice random modulation.

However, in the utilities modulation, the random normal mode even at 0% smoothness will sound pretty smooth compared to the MSF pervoice random modulation.

Since the actual utilities random modulation does not allow us to go from jumpy to smooth variations and force us to choose between the normal mode and the step mode,

Will it not be simpler to have only one mode that work the same way as the pervoice random modulation in MSF ?

Well, I'm not sure if it is really the same and for sake of backwards compartibility I couldn't change it anyways I'm afraid.
