This book requires learning a programming language?

Yes, PureData, which is a visual programming language, making it somewhat like Reaktor et al.

Very good book, though, especially for those areas of 'sound design' which aren't 'synth preset design' eg film and games industry.

What i'm able to do atm: I'm able to make a bass, pad, pluck, unrealistic key/piano, kick, snare, hi-hat. I am hoping to increase my repertoire, but i only have vague ideas of what i could possibly make. The Howard Scarr book is definitely useful, and it ADSR looks a good resource.

How come nobody has published a book using "modern" synths Serum, Sylenth1, Zebra 2, for examples?

Thanks for this, i'll give this a read. I wanted a book i can hold in my hand and read at night before i go to bed, but it looks like there's nothing "modern". I bought good books about mixing (Sound on Sound), general dance music (Rick Snoman), and now i wanted one about synthesis / sound design but it looks like nothing "modern" available.

I don't know if it's for you, but, I often read ebooks on my phone. Not sure how it is with the Howard Scarr book, but, the Adobe Reader app can "convert" PDF's to a more readable format. Like, when there's lots of small text, it can display the text in a bigger font, which makes it nicely readable.

Gonna check with the Scarr book, if it's possible there too. Edit: Doesn't work, unfortunately...

I was going to recommend Andy Weir's new book, Project Hail Mary, but it seems the OP is after something less interesting. I'd have thought synths were things you learned about by doing, not by reading about them.

I got this book a while back: "Refining Sound: A Practical Guide to Synthesis and Synthesizers" by Brian K. Shepard https://www.whsmith.co.uk/products/refi ... 22963.html
It uses the free Crystal VST. But you can apply what you learned to other synths.

I’d also recommend "Welsh's Synthesizer Cookbook: Synthesizer Programming, Sound Analysis, and Universal Patch Book" by Fred Welsh. It was published in 2006, but it’s really useful for understanding analog synth programming. I don’t know, if you can still buy it new, I bought my copy on eBay.
