Mirko Ruta has my vote. His sounds are so fresh and alive, consistently, regardless of genre:

My favorite is Joseph Hollo - no contest. There are a number of notable, inspired and talented sound designers, but Hollo is in a class by himself, IMO.

If you like techno try Rob lee !!!!

Interesting topic and timely too, as I was just thinking an hour ago about the same topic in a tangential way.... was going thru a sound bank of a relatively unknown sound designer App Sound, Matthias Sauer) and realised why unlike some I am quite comfortable being a musician not a sound designer (that is rolling my own patches).. I hear a great sound and I don't' think wow, I wonder how he/she did that, let me go reverse engineer it, I hear it and I want to go write a song....that's all that happens to me, it inspires me to write a part or a song.

I don't' think I can narrow it down to one person..

I do have a top list (Eric Persing and some other members of the Spectrasonics team, Big Tone, Electric Himalaya, Bryan Sound Author, and Matthias Sauer, and a few others including Hollo, and TUC (Viktor from u-he)).. I also find some designers and I click for some synths whereas their work on other synths and I don't click at all.

But indeed if you held a gun to my head and forced me to choose one it would have to be Eric Persing.... The God of sound design imho..

But it clearly is very personal, as some of the names mentioned above, and I am sure to come, (will) have me scratching my head.. really?

Jason Schoepfer, from Rocky Mountain Sounds, really floats my boat lately.
Also Jaap Visser, from Triple Spiral Audio.
My main tools: Kontakt, Omnisphere, Samplemodeling + Audio Modeling. Unify = godsend. Tari's libraries also rock.

Howard Scarr does excellent sounds. Though his are limited to the U-he brand.
Brian Lee is also a sound designer I've recently discovered that makes sounds I like.

what happened to hans-joerg scheffler (Dr Wu) ...who did many of the factory presets of Omnisphere ?

Post

I think (emphasis on think) he mostly converted most if not all of the Atmosphere presets to Omnisphere and got credited for that, I think that is what I remember reading.

SynprezFM (the presets that came with Dexed, as sorted by Black Winny afaicr). I see that they also have a DX7 app for Android:

The Unfinished is great. I have a few sets for omnisphere, repro, zebra, and serum and they are all great. I love reverse-engineering them.

I recently discovered Tone Pusher's Serum presets for synthwave, darksynth, 80's horror, etc. I've been very happy with them and they are really cheap.
