OK, gonna be a bit of a curmodgeon here. I'm new to the party, admittedly, and I see real potential for this host. But I don't see any indication that T2 is actually in development. I did a search here. I mean, the alternative to thinking that the T1 giveaway means T2 is around the corner is that the T1 giveaway means that T2 ain't gonna happen.

you give it away free with the hopes that more people will check it out. Sales of T1 have probably dwindled significantly at this point, especially with nothing to fuel purchases. So you give it away... get a ton of traffic... and a ton of new interest with the idea that maybe these folks will get hooked like some of us crackheads who've been smokin' T for the last couple years. What does Jules/Mackie lose by giving T1 away for free... pretty much nothing other than the bandwidth that's been consumed. What do they gain? potentially a whole crop of new folks who never peeked at it in the first place... people like free stuff, and if they like tracktion enough they might go ahead and purchase in the next round. I bet the Mackie servers got slammed so hard when this was announced.. so I'm sure they are well aware of the fact that they have a captive audience right now.

the downside of all this, we (crackheads) still know nothing... and thus must resort to combing this alley (kvr) for other things to tide us over (ext, Live, etc)... but thus far, nothing gets me as high as T! damn I need a fix!!

I hear ya ModulR, and after I made that post I went and looked and sure enough, there are some hints here and there that T2 is really in development.

And I fully concur that it is a smart move by Mackie to give it away. The logical thing to think here is that T2 is gonna have so much new and cool stuff that we Free T1ers will gladly pay for it. I'll give ya that too.

Now, just to continue stirring the pot I will put this forth: T1 for free is an incredible deal. T1 at the old price of $80 was a very good deal. But I don't see what exactly Tracktion's gimmick is. It is indeed simple, and the idea of only using one screen is great, if it worked (I've noticed that I find myself pretty much having to lock and then hide my VSTis as I need them, which negates this feature), but I don't see where I'm getting anything out of Tracktion other than great value (even at $80,but especially at $0). Case in point, the other 2 hosts I've got: Sonar 4 - a high end competitor to ProTools, with tons of bells and whistles and disco shit for king dog dithering, file and project management, etc. That's its gimmick. Live 4 - its gimmick is being kind of a super sampler: record your Midi or audio into a cell, arrange them how you want, play them back live, break free of the traditional linear arrangement ideology.

Beyond price (I'll give you that much but I haven't looked into all the others: I know exT is a killer deal) what makes Tracktion such a great thing: ease of use? Live 4 is pretty damn easy. Learning curve: Live 4 takes a bit longer but once you get it you're on your way. Editing, painting audio (a la Acid): Sonar's got this one hands down. Loop creaton: Live 4.

You have Jules, Jorgen, the guy behind Podium, Arguru, doing all this great cutting edge next generation stuff & they're completely on thier own..

How many ppl are behind R&D in companies like Sony, Stienberg & Logic?

These solo devs are proportionately kicking the big company's asses all over the place.

Utter simplicity and the way it handles audio. I arrange audio with tons of edits in it, and I love how you can slice 'em, stretch 'em, pitch 'em, slip 'em, etc... very easily. If you are into microediting your tracks, Tracktion is tops.

and uh... object oriented! (vsts on clips! I it!)


The indie developers are indeed kicking ass... w00t!
