If you had to stick to one DAW, which one would it be?

I voted Cakewalk/Sonar since i do use HW Instruments and need Stable Audio Recording And Patch Recall.
If i used Vst's I would Choose Studio One since that is my second favorite and are very stable on my System.

I don't do it that way. I cut pieces from other takes and drag them into position on the main vocal track. Sometimes they might already be in that track - e.g. I usually take the best chorus performance and use it in every chorus - but other times I will drag them over from another track. It's so quick and easy in S1 - CTRL-slice, CTRL-slice, then drag.machinesworking wrote: Wed Feb 02, 2022 7:14 amIt's much quicker than editing multiple takes on separate tracks, but if you're comfortable with the long method you use, you can probably find some reasons to keep using it
I used to do all my vocal prep in Audition but now I do almost all of it in S1 because the tools are so much easier to work with. I still go through and remove all the breathing and stuff in Audition but only after I've got an edited vocal track from S1 to work from. It's probably reduced the time I spend on that stuff by two-thirds or more. I used to always dread recording vocals, so I'd put it off until the last possible minute, but Studio One has made it so much les painful that I do it all the time now. So instead of having an album's worth of music before I record any vox, I am now recording vox as soon as I've got the lyrics sorted out, song by song.

You should give comping in Studio One a go then. Sounds like your way is a lot more work for essentially the same result. It's simply a way to composite takes that doesn't involved cut paste dragging all oove the place. It's quick and solid.BONES wrote: Thu Feb 03, 2022 12:55 amI don't do it that way. Except that, judging from the video you linked to yesterday, it absolutely involves cutting and pasting/dragging. It just involves the extra step of setting up the comping environment before you start.

well its ableton live, solely based on the captive function. could easily be one of the other installed daws, if theyd have this functionality - preferably renoise3, just for the sake of it or the late and great taktik!

Gotta say that the comping feature in S1 looks to be nicely implemented.

It's hardly going to save you any time, though, is it? The amount of work that has to go into it is still substantial. i.e. He's not making any proper decisions about what goes where, he's just choosing arbitrary regions to show the features. In reality, you'll spend a few hours listening to all the takes individually and working out very, very precisely which is the best to start with and where it needs help from a different take. The time you actually spend cobbling it together is comparatively unimportant. It might save me a couple of minutes in a 4 hour session.
That said, there might be enough in it for me to change the way I record to suit the feature a bit better. e.g. I usually do full takes of an entire song in one hit but if I did it a bit at a time - do multiple takes of each verse together and then the chorus - then the looping feature would make sense and I'd probably end up getting my takes down a lot faster. It might also encourage me to do more takes because I usually only do the bare minimum.
Still, I learned a few things I didn't know about Studio One, like that pop-up Record panel and the audition feature. I'm not sure how useful they'll be but until now I didn't even know they existed. Pretty much everything I know about S1 is stuff I have discovered just by doing. It's incredibly intuitive compared to just about everything else I've ever tried to use.

You seem to have gone past your initial "distate" for Gregor, so go ahead and watch at least the first 20 episodes - like me, I'm sure you've missed a lot more that just record panelBONES wrote: Fri Feb 04, 2022 3:23 amStill, I learned a few things I didn't know about Studio One, like that pop-up Record panel and the audition feature. And even Gregor failed to cover everything - this is something I found out just yesterday and was very surprised (in this case in not so positive way, because the implementation isn't very consistent with MIDI clip shared copies):

Gregor still creeps me out, I'd much rather watch Joe, but why would I watch stupid videos when I have work to do? I can get everything done that I need to get done without watching videos and I feel no need to learn the application beyond what I need it for. I generally watch the 60 second videos but I rarely watch anything longer. There simply aren't enough hours in the day.antic604 wrote: Fri Feb 04, 2022 6:15 amYou seem to have gone past your initial "distate" for Gregor, so go ahead and watch at least the first 20 episodes - like me, I'm sure you've missed a lot more that just record panel
Let me elaborate. We wanted to release an EP before Xmas but ran out of time, mostly because of lockdowns, etc., so we determined we'd get it out before the first Bandcamp Friday of the year, which is tomorrow (actually today here). I finally finished mastering last night and got the EP uploaded, ready to go live, at about 1am. I had hoped to have time to do a lyric video for one of the songs but I haven't even had time to think about it, so that will have to be done over the weekend. It couldn't have been done earlier because I had to work the last two weekends. If I can't finish it this weekend, I won't do it at all because we need to get moving on the next album or we'll miss our (self-imposed) deadline for that, too. We've got two songs finished and a couple more I can whip into shape fairly easily but we still need another 6 songs, minimum, and we need it all to be ready to go by the end of September if we want to get it out before Xmas. I'd also like to sneak another EP in before then, too (the EPs are re-workings of old songs and cover versions), and getting a 6-track mini-album out for the side-project would also be awesome (but seriously unlikely).
I don't get home from work until around 7pm most nights, so by the time I have dinner there is only 4 or 5 hours to work on music and related stuff before I have to go to bed. I should really ditch the 80s side-project, it takes up way too much of my time, but I actually enjoy mucking about with those songs and that does help me with the NOVAkILL stuff. on average, at least two nights a week are taken up with other activities so I'm lucky if I can find more than 20-25 hours a week to spend on music. It's not enough.
Bottom line - I have no time to watch videos. The only TV I get to watch is over dinner and whatever's on in the background while I'm working on music.

In my experience learning a DAW using official resources - videos, user manual, etc. - is beneficial, because not only you're finding out about features you'd not find yourself, but also discover new ways of working that can completely transform your process or even your music.
I'll save you some time and already reply to the above that you know how your process and music should be like and you don't need a DAW to influence you on this.
Now that I saved you couple of minutes go watch Gregor doing stuff

It's funny how literaly NOT SINGLE ONE of the 10 features you mentioned interest me personally. And I'm sure I'm not alone in this feeling.
Where's modulation? Where a modular synth/FX environment? Where's a clip launcher? Where are container devices for my sound design - racks, layers, selectors, splitters? How do I use it with touch screen exclusively? How do I load VST2 and 32-bit plugins? Why does my session crash when one of plugins decided to go belly up? And so on...
Are you sure you're not someone else's alt-account? They're also convinced there's only one good way to do things, only one good workflow and - probably - only one good music style. And it so happens it's their way, their workflow and their music.

^^^ workspaces are nice because reopens the plugins too "Workspaces - Global vs Project", btw. always use the right tool for the job for ex. MIDI orchestration supporting totally missing from BWS/AL so
so not fully get this voting anyway, but that's my problem
