The UCA222 is only $10 at Sweetwater and I don't know another in that price range. I suggest you look at what you really want to do, what you really need to be able to do it, and plan your workflow and gear together. For example, a better computer may get you further than a better interface. Call Sweetwater if you live in the US. I have a Roland UA55 but it's replaced by a newer model.
The others with companion apps are more $. I imagine most interfaces have settings but I can't guarantee that a higher interface buffer will affect plugins, tho'

I think Michael has given great advices, also about defining what you really want to do and see what tools you need to reach that goal. Indeed a more powerful compu may be more helpful than a new audio device.
I just want to add / repeat that controlling the buffer size from within MuLab for Mac is something on the wishlist and one day (yet undefined atm) it will be implemented.

I don't live in the US, but perhaps I can find here a store, which can help me. At last for me it's the question, how it is possible to record in Mulab, when you can't set the audio buffer to lower values than 512. IMO you should have a buffersize not bigger than 128 during the recording. Even a faster computer can't help in that case.
