Is talent born or created with hard work and practice

Wow, Hink and I might be biological bros. I was also given up for adoption at birth (adopted at 13 months), my Apgars were 0s and 1s at birth and I wasn’t expected to survive let alone live a normal life, I had a mild form of epilepsy as a child (absence seizures, aka petit mal), and we’re both musicians. <twilight zone theme/>

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Some brief comments. In intelligence research, a higher score basically just means that you can learn something faster and, at best, at higher levels than others. It does not mean you were born knowing e.g. physics already with no need to learn.
I doubt any serious gene researcher would depart from this stand. There is no such thing as a finished music chromosome granting you the ability to play like Mozart from birth. A talent for music means that your genes have survived a lot by help of the organism’s hearing, compared to, say, vision and taste, and therefore is good at adopting anything sound related. Add to this that it has long been known that chromosomes can be inactive through life unless they are triggered by the environment, so your oh so musical talent may never come into use if it really is inherited. Dispositions without learning are worth no more but an internet chit-chat.

I never thought I'd see another "all your bass belong to us" post but this matrixo9 cat has some real talent in that regard. Unless of course this is the result of many years of practice, then it's at the very least not talent alone.

It is a privilege of human beings to have different opinions about genes, but it is not a privilege of the genes to take them into consideration.Hink wrote: Wed Feb 09, 2022 4:12 am With that said I dont think it unreasonable for me to have quite a different perspective on genetics,

To be, or not to be. What is the question?

It is not a privilege of the Egg to take you into consideration (or something).

Touché and amen. Flying eggs do not care about your personal anecdotes, neither does natural selection. It is a hard science question, not a feeling in your toe.
Reading the thread title does not provide a hint?

define "success"?
never had a number one hit, but ive managed to somehow, survive this long.
id call that success, given what i know about the period between 74 and now.

oh, and bones was right, at least regarding encouraging our kids.
keep the goals realistic, "hey son, maybe you can get on this local team"
then "keep pushing, you could get top goal scorer"
but whatever, try to keep it fun as well, success and achievements are worthless if he's miserable.
believe me, it's no fun being one of the best at something you really f**king despise
