MSF or MXXX: Replicate Knocktonal "additive resonance EQ" approach for adding tuned sub to any kick

Sure, you could just run a sampler module set to constant pitch, then an oscillator with normal (key tracked) pitch, but I've done countless versions of that, and would like to try something different.

The technique at 3:40 in the video seems like something I'd like to try:

I'm guessing it's something along the lines of a sampler module in MSF or MXXX spitting out a drum sample with constant pitch followed by some sort of tuned resonator that's excited by the kick sample passing through it?

Something else? According to the vid, he's adding "additive resonance EQ" Looks to me like a sort of odd/even control for overtones built into the eq. I've used some other eq's with similar feature before, but don't recall having come across that in the meldaverse.

I've seen a few examples now of this plug pulling off this trick, and it the results are better than I would have guessed, so I'd like to replicate the approach as closely as possible as a starting point.

Specifically, I'd like to use an 80's kick sample from something like a LM1 or 505 which has a good clicky and mid-centric attack phase, but a relatively short sub body that doesn't really resolve to a given pitch... then use this to drag out that decay so it smoothly blooms into a pitch that tracks with the key triggering it to gel it with the mix and add overall fullness to the kick without increasing the peak level.

That sounds like a simple job for MAutoDynamicEq, there you probably won't even need to send MIDI, but audio with pitch detector should work just fine.

Couldn't you do something like this with the modal filter in MSF?

hmmm.. maybe. I forgot about that one. I was just trying the resonator, and not happy with those results. It's particularly interesting to me (I think it was in this video) how the character changes dramatically according to the mix and level of the even/odd resonances and then with the Q factor going from and old school 808 to a thick and less obviously tuned edm kick according to the mix of overtones.

I use the non-auto version often, but it's been a while since I've used the auto version. I don't recall any sort of odd/even harmonic control similar to the vid, or are you just referring to the overall idea of adding a resonance?

I definitely want pitch tracked since the goal is to have the original kick attack that then flows seamlessly into a resonant body whose pitch is determined by the incoming note.

The Harmonics parameter of all bands of our dynamic EQs should do that just fine and negative value will amplify odd and attenuate even or vice versa. There are some more settings too there.

In the modal filter, you can have any relationship between odd/even harmonics and even inharmonics.

Right-click on a band and look for the "harmonics" section in the bottom right.

For key tracking in the equalizers, check the MIDI button in the toolbar to the right.
