forums can be subscribed to as well, unlike a thread subscription that is in the dropdown on the bottom of the page it's right below the list of topics in a forum, I could see one accidentally subscribing to a forum.

ftr this morning I woke up to a notification I had like 60 something PMs...I did not but I did notice that we have a new PM button so I suspect this was as a result of that.

I had two, and curiously, they had both been deleted by the original sender, last year. The PM total now shows total unread rather than total new. Total new would reset to 0 once you'd viewed the PM page whereas total unread remains fixed until you read (or delete unread deleted messages).
