Words get their meaning also due to the context and I guess the context is clear here. It's about shredding audio. At the same time I can understand that this name can be perceived in a negative way.

I assume it can make a big difference from which region you are.

I had this random thought reading this thread.

It's called The Abuser MK2. What about calling it A Bruiser MK2 or just Bruiser MK2. A bit different meaning but I guess in the same ballpark, probably a lot less controversial, but still a somehow similar sounding.

No idea how this is perceived in other parts of the English speaking world or if it's a good name, though.

Cultural awareness is great as long as it's done to get a better understanding of each other and without the intention to make someone look bad without a reason. It's good to see that this discussion stays well mannered.

Thank you for the free update Luca. I've enjoyed the original plugin since it was released about a million years ago (or so it seems). To be honest, I'd never considered the negative connotations of the name, despite being a Brit, it never once entered my head. I just thought it was a good name for a plugin that abused audio, being a distortion plugin and all that. I really couldn't care less what you call it, there are more important things to worry about.

I guess context and nuance are lost on some of you. I’m not going to try and change that but wish you well despite your cognitive limitations.

The feeling is mutual ... your lack of empathy and understanding is not unexpected.

itanever wrote: Fri Mar 04, 2022 8:37 pm has the word 'abuse' ever had positive connotations? also it's kind of a tradition to use words that refer to misuse, destruction, danger and harm for naming gear, esp. distortion units and synths. in the context of audio i'd say it has positive connotations. i wouldn't decapitate anyone irl, but i sure as hell like to decapitate some audio. the same goes for abusing, decimation, trashing and smashing. there's a whole thread for names like these. i mean, one could argue that the word "distort" itself has negative connotations, esp. in the context of media manipulation, fake news etc.

Names are a matter of taste. I am not British but German and yet I am not a huge fan of this particular name, but (so far I haven't tried the demo however think it was more due to the fact that Luca didn't code it himself originally) I think there ar far worse names - e.g. I'd never consider anything released by a company named "Beatskillz" [sic!] and the worst for me so far is probably "Punish" by "Heavyocity" with a GUI that seeks to look like a snake's eye... truly mind-boggingly dreadful - others however love it - it's a matter of taste really. I wouldn't try to please everyone. But yes - that name is bad imo.

Edit: and yeah - Decapitator - wtf were they thinking? :-o

Izotope Trash? What is this, a plugin for garbage?!

Yes, that's a terrible name too imo

Chill that hyper-sensitivity and have some perspective - it's just a plugin, not a statement about domestic violence.

YES ...FFS

Relax... it's just a plug in

As long as this topic is derailed, I think a lot of interesting points have been made. Since the process of making music is really about sound and how it is perceived, it seems natural that the artist perception of the tools he chooses will have an effect on the music he makes. As a developer trying to put his tools in the hands of as many people as possible, the last thing you want to do is turn off a customer before they even give you a listen. Not much different from not using a plugin because the GUI.

That said, this update is actually very nice, I like the new GUI and added controls, I miss the modulating drive knob.

But they are just plug ins after all, and if we didn't have so many to choose from we'd probably never have this conversation:)

Convinced me to buy. ( :ud: )

Seriously though, really like the plugin.

The drive modulation is still there. I decided to remove the animation because it was just wrong imho. If you wanted to find your sweet spot between that know and the envelope, you had to turn the env off, change Drive and set the env again. Now you can move the knob while Env amount is set to something different from 0.

Anyways, I have already prepared a replacement for The Abuser. I'm still undecided if I'll release it or not. It's the same plugin.. just renamed and with a wonderful neutral grey color.

Now that I'm not upset any longer, I just want to know why nobody posted on the mk1 thread after I wrote about the upcoming mkII version: viewtopic.php?p=8368670#p8368670

Not a single person asked for a name change since I were about to release the mkII version and, to be totally honest, not a single person complained about that in 8 years.

Ah.. and I know that someone wrote to our dealers after the discussions in this thread because, suddenly, we were warned that this product is now unmarketable. Furthermore, a pluri-banned user is now stalking our videos with comments accusing us to support Russia. We are banning all the accounts that user is creating on YT as well, but I'm very very tired, disgusted and disappointed.

That's the level we reached here on KVR.

Cheers,
Luca

Didn't even see that thread!

There's a reason why most devs don't post here, and that's because KVR is, on the whole, a free-for-all shitshow. I find it entertaining but everything I hate about social media, the snide comments, the "oh look at how clever I am" responses, the "wow I'm so funny" posts, finds its way here. The quality, thoughtful, useful posts are swamped by pages of crap most of the time.

What's also a shame is that most devs avoid GearSlutz now for very similar reasons. Not all of them, there are still a few that contribute, but there's enough aggression and unpleasantry there too that most devs seem to think "why bother".
