SPAN is great and being free, I hardly ever see anybody looking for an alternative.
Im using Hornet's MultiFreq, since its pretty clean, does its job and can act multichannell. Its very cheap, although not free. Thats my 2 cents.

All of the mentioned will work, yet there is also a reason why most are just using Span (free).
You can be creative in any right place on Earth, and not only in the wealthiest cities. Bring the world feelings from everywhere, and not only feelings of capitalistic or jail environment.

The Hornet is looking very tempting at half price. Some nice free stuff too. Certainly some selection out there.

ToneBoosters Spectrogram includes now a spectrum analyzer mode, probably not as deep as SPAN but it's a free alternative, as you asked:

There was also the rumored SPAN Plus which doesn't exist, yet it does exist.
