I'm a big Tracktion fan, thrilled to have bought a license. But I understand what you're saying. Don't worry about the flaming, some of us still see where you're coming from.
I agree with the others that say your upgrade path will make up for it; however, in the meantime I still DO see what you're getting at.

I bought a licence because I want to use Tracktion. I use it as my main audio sequencer and will upgrade when T2 is out.
TracktionNFR seems to me a bit like a time limited demo. When they stop giving out the NFR licences the version of NFR you have will only last until you need to install the OS again. I suppose this could be years but they are not really giving it away totally free forever. That is unless the NFR version stays around after T2 release, which seems unlikely. The only reason I would feel ripped off is if after buying it I decided I didn't like Tracktion and would have figured this out if I had used the NFR version rather than a DEMO.

You are 100% correct, the people arguing against you have not put themselves in your position.
The Mackie website should make explicit the options of the different versions, that would keep the customer informed.
That would be fair.
I believe a logical person given the facts before purchase would get the NFR version today, then wait till T2 comes out, then try it. And all this for free. I can't see the point of buying today unless I get a greater discount than $80 from the price of T2 (which has not been stated on the website, so who knows).

I'm a little surprised by that offer, maybe your starting a Traction museum? Could be worth double in a few years.

i feel half your pain, i bought mine at the end of October on Ebay for $40, and only got it the day before the NFR version was available for free. It has taken me a while to come to terms with that, and no i do not like to try and justify it by some esoteric value my version might have in the future with a still unannounced upgrade. What i always come back to is value always decreases with time, and when i bought my license it was a good value. That some other option existed that was less expensive (or free) does not mean that what i got was less valuable.

The NFR debate as well as T2 and the Grand Goundhogging is all a result of Mackie's policy - keeping the users out of the loop.
This comes as a contrast to Jules' behaviour before the Mackie deal.
Since little information is given, rumors blossom.
Because neither Jules or Mackie representatives frequent this forum - because there is no moderation or direction, all we see are groundhogs and hoax threads.

I bought Tracktion V1 off Ebay for 35$. I bought it cause it's a kick ass app. A couple days later after I won the bid Mackie gave it away for free. But I know I will have a discount for Tracktion 2 which more than makes up for what I paid for Tracktion 1 becuase I am getting Tracktion 2 as soon as it's out.
Either way, I paid for and got the real license which allows me to get new installs in case of hard drive crashes, viruses, computer switches, etc. There is a tangible difference between the NFR license and the commercial one. Either way im happy.

Actually the NFR pros and cons voiced here are valid.
It is a sales tool by RMS/(mackie) to get the product out to those who haven't seen or tried it.
Perfectly valid and as mentioned those who purchased the v1 version will undoubtably get a nice discount when upgrading. Most if not all software companies do that. Why not support those who got on board early and supported the product?
As one who had not used Tracktion until the NFR version was released...well it worked also. I am impressed with the free v1 and will be purchasing the v2 at whatever price they wish to place on the product. ( within common sense dontchaknow )
It is an excellent offering and I just wish I had been using it sooner. Would have saved a lot of time and hair pulling for sure.
