Hey,
Im new here, but I've been using TyrellN6 on Logic Pro X for some time now on my relatively old MacBook Air. I have really enjoyed its many versatile sounds, but right now I am thinking of upgrading to a M1-powered 2020 MacBook Pro. I have also been made aware from a post on this forum that Tyrell does not work on M1 powered MacBooks, at least not directly. Which leads me to my question...

Does TyrellN6 work through Rosetta 2 or is there another way to have it be available for use in the future on an M1 Mac (apart from it getting a possible future update to make it Apple Silicon compatible)? Or is it just obsolete for now?

Post

It'll work via Rosetta2, but I wouldn't recommend using the AU version (the format Logic uses). Apple introduced changes in the AU format a while back, which leads to multiple problems with the AU version (GUI elements not reacting to MIDI CC input, parameter automation via plugin GUI not working, ...).
The VST2 version should work quite ok on the M1 via Rosetta2, though.

There'll eventually be an update adding native Silicon support and fixing the AU problems on newer macOS versions, but currently we can't even guesstimate when that will happen.

Thanks for a quick response!
I use exclusively Logic so I guess no VST version for me. Are you able to tell how the GUI elements react (or don't react) to already existing MIDI input? I don't really need to use Tyrell for future projects, but I'd love it to still work on my currently existing projects.

Existing projects will work, and you can also create new projects with the AU version.
The main issues are that the GUI elements won't move on the GUI if you control them via a MIDI learned controller. The audio will still react, it's just the graphical elements on the GUI that won't follow the MIDI controller input.
In the same way, you can still create automation lanes by "painting" them in Logic.
What doesn't work is starting a recording and then using the mouse to turn GUI elements on the plugin in order to record automation.

Ah okay. Great news since I didn't really rely on those features anyway!

Thanks a lot!

Any chance to see Tyrell for M1 soon? I am stunned by its sound and simplicity, nice work :) I can do the same sound with Zebra.

Won't be soon, sorry.
First we need to update Filterscape and Uhbik.
After that, we have to evaluate if there are enough resources to work on Tyrell, next to Zebra3 and everything else we are working on.

Oh ok, then please prioritize Zebra 3 at all costs :) Please just forget my above comment, I can do the exact same sound with Zebra.
