Which DAW: If Money Were No Object?

a lot of what I use I bought _as though_ money doesn't matter. Last time I paid full price for Cubase was Cubase 5, though, in the box from Guitar Center.
I'm having to reinstantiate everything, it's enormous and MUCH worse than it was July 2020.

If money were no object I would use Live purely so I could use Max4Live. I would link it to Reaper and do most everything in Reaper still, so really I want Max4Reaper. My comparison DAWs that I know reasonably well are Bitwig and S1, both of which I had then sold, and FL which I might look at again if the audio editing side gets up to speed and I cant sell it anyway
EDIT - I just checked for the first time in years and Max4Live patches work in Max, and using BlueCat connector or similar I can stream the audio from MAX directly into Reaper. So that's a done deal then. By the looks of things many of my future projects might be mostly in Max with assembling with Reaper in the final edit stage. Many other projects will be purely Reaper. Quite excited at the prospect

Yes: Ableton Livetommyzai wrote: Mon Mar 14, 2022 10:53 pm *If money didn't matter, would you choose the same DAW? Why? Which?
No, that was not a cheap purchase back then but I'm happy with this choice. I've DAW whored plenty but always came to Live as the primary option.

Nuendo projects will only load in Cubase Pro. Other editions of Cubase display an error dialog if you try to load a Nuendo project and will not proceed. Personally, I think this is a stupid restriction, as Nuendo is really "Cubase Pro Ultimate". However, Steinberg has chosen to maintain product differentiation - different product names, different file suffixes, different release schedules and different product managers.jancivil wrote: Wed Mar 16, 2022 7:14 pm Nuendo projects work in Cubase and vice versa; If it's using something not in Cubase it tells you.

Cubase all the way, I use a lot of DAW's for different features but Cubase is still a midi friendly beast. I find other DAW's a bit clunky with midi but don't get me wrong that's not to say they are not good.
Having said that they need to increase and update the amount of free instruments and inserts
Cost was not a factor in my purchase either and I bought my first copy when I was broke in uni.

So far I haven't found a perfect DAW. I wish I could do a mashup of multiple DAWs.
If Ableton Live or Bitwig implemented some features from Cubase, either of these would perfect for me, unfortunately these are way too focused on a particular use case. Live is great if you want to make music based on short midi or audio loops. Bitwig is great for modular and generative stuff. Outside of these use cases they start falling apart quickly.
Cubase is a bit clunky and inefficient in some areas, but I think when considering pros and cons of all DAWs it's still the best option. Shame ReWire is dead. Hopefully Steinberg will implement Ableton Link or something.

I started with MOTU Performer (pre-digital). It was an excellent MIDI device at the time. I haven't used DP since the early versions, but I'm sure it works wonders with MIDI. They've been at it for 35 years . . .

I've said this before, but I don't think the host actually matters as much, but rather if you know HOW to do, WHAT you want to do in it! But if you're taking votes I'm all in for Pro Tools and Ableton. Both absolutely amazing. Each good for different things. PT sounds great and I like the GUI. Ableton is just amazing if you want to play around with things.

What if money were an object and you couldn't afford PT? What would you swap for it in your dynamic duo of Ableton Live + __________?GuyLacome wrote: Tue Mar 22, 2022 12:12 am I've said this before, but I don't think the host actually matters as much, but rather if you know HOW to do, WHAT you want to do in it! "IF" money were an object, then I'd just stick with Ableton! Wouldn't need to add anything else.tommyzai wrote: Tue Mar 22, 2022 12:46 amWhat if money were an object and you couldn't afford PT? If I had to re-learn everything from scratch I'd probably choose Cubase. But since I don't want to break every object in my house while shouting insanities like a maniac because I don't know how to execute the most basic task, I'm not gonna do so
. Studio One would also be an option.
But I think we can all agree that the best bang for the buck are Reaper on Windows and Logic on Mac.
