Ahem - that wouldn't be an idea of a general cure either. Just watch the LUG - it's more stuffed with complaints than ever before! You seem to be one of the few lucky dudes.macha wrote: better jump to a G5 and logic 7. Linux has come a long way since then.Sascha Franck wrote:Hold on - how comes I've heard that before?MDMAchine wrote: But I say get mandrake and learn linux today, it will be the best working enviorment very soon! IMO
Hm... was it like 5 years ago?
It won't happen. Sad but true, it just won't.
It isn't ready but very useful, certainly more useful then it was two years ago.
However, most people using Linux for multi-media don't use it for DAW type stuff, but rather installations and the like. Or movie-related stuff but that's a completely different league.

I do actually believe. But...tetraplan wrote: Linux has come a long way since then.

See, that's the point. However, most people using Linux for multi-media don't use it for DAW type stuff, but rather installations and the like. Or movie-related stuff but that's a completely different league.
I've got no problems with either XP or OSX (at least nothing that serious), and while perhaps Linux would be running WAY better (I actually don't have a clue about it at all), the things we all need (at least most of us) simply don't exist.
I have a few formidably working workstations, all the plugins I may ever need (well, apart from some on my wishlist) and so on.
So, for me (and I guess that's true for most musicians) there's absolutely no need to even try it out. OK - if there was a broad range of freely available sequencers and plugins to check out, I might do it, but obviously I won't spend any money on it, especially considering that the plugins I own just wouldn't work anymore.
Of course, that's the bad thing about it - Linux is just too late to be in for a real competition.
If it wanted to be competetive, there had to be some major sequencers (or others, providing similar functionalities) ported, along with the most important plugins - WITHOUT the user having to spend much money for the transition. And, even worse, this had to happen all at ONCE, because otherwise you won't attract users allready owning a finely working system.

Is that not your answer, grasshopper? You must work on your poor impulse control and banish your VSTi to a different folder, keeping only those you trust and need on a regular basis.ttoz wrote:If i never used any of these, and stuck to cubase just as a midi and audio host and used all my outboard gear, I suspect, I would also never have a crash. I also suspect, that those who find their host to be rock solid, do not use such a huge variety of plugs as I do.
This thread just made me realise that since I got my new PC about 2 months ago I have not had a single crash using anything, not even alphas and betas [and I am on three separate programmes for audio and graphics at the moment].

I don't know about the old days with software that works, but I do miss the old days when we had a monthly competition here at KvR.

Sure, but you could probably narrow it down to a dozen which would minimize the opportunities for conflict. I can only get away with 4 because I rely so much on ORION's generators. It takes drums and samplers completely out of the equation and WaspXT counts as another synth so really I use 7 main instruments and sevral others that don't really count for favourites lists. All-up I would say that a dozen instruments is about right.

WaspXT covers about 70% of basslines and a lot of pads, arps and general filler-type sounds.
LOVEkILLER does the rest of the bass work and 90% of leads.
iDkILLER still gets a run because, for some strange reason, it works better with the gate than the others.
kARMAkILLER does a bit of everything, mostly of the gnarly persuasion.
JX Synth I just love the fat unison sound so I find excuses to use it.
Sampler does all my strings and a few other bits and pieces.
DrumRack does all the drums and vocal samples.
When none of the above applies, I turn to JOYkILLER [big trance-style sounds], Synth 1 [hard-sync noises] or PlastiCZ! [just plain good].

HI
Thanks 'ttoz' - it was your advice (amongst others) that made me NOT go G5/Logic, but rather stay PC/SX!
Got my dual Xeon the other day;, had to send it back to Carillon as it wasn't working!
I kinda agree with the tweak thing, if your got like 2 gig of RAM on board saving 50 meg is pretty meaningless - even with 512meg it's not the difference between life and death, is it?
I think stuffing your DAW with 100's of VST's, demoing, un-installing, constantly up-dating the host, O/S, the VST's and expecting reliability is probable airing on the side of recklessness - I know I have done it.
These last few months without a DAW has been good, in a way as it has made me think hard about just how 'Bloated' my software arsenal was when I was running Logic, I have gone full circle and started to look upon host's as more important tools than synths/fx/samplers/romplers.
I have most of the top host's for the PC platform and interestingly have come to the conclusion that 'they' appear to have more effect on how you might put together a track and how it might develop than what particular sound source is being used.
Don't get me wrong I am not advocating buying like 6 host programs and dumping your vst's but simply that learning a host to the point of being able to construct a song within it is certainly as liberating (if not more so) than using a 'new' synth.
Gone off track a bit, what I advise is strip the system down, re-install, tweak to basic level and start again, I think this constant renewal thing as I stated before - like using your DAW as a test bed for every new app that comes out is bound to put a spanner in the works at some point, as is tweaking to extreme - when I could only get like 4 Ambiences running on my new £2,000 DAW 2 years ago I was gutted, but on reflection it had no bearing on my ability to compose and produce good music.
One big hurdle I have crossed now is that I don't turn my DAW on to 'play' - yes I am enjoying myself and it's fun but it's also a serious thing - I start a project, focused, I have a plan - this is what I want to achieve, I want to make music that will have value and potential and with that in mind MY DAW is a tool that needs to be coveted and treated well - if not it will deterioate and be of no use, or at best not allow me to reach the dizzy heights ..... !
Think of it this way would an Acoustic instrumentalist put his 'tool' through all the shit many of us put our DAW's through?
Don't mention Mr Hendrix please.
Flipper.
