FWIW - download via the ASC was very quick and painless for me. Maybe something system specific going on?

Multiple times had the download error out, forcing it to start all over again. And of course, this means that they are hammering their bandwidth even more, what with all the re-downloads. They know about this problem. It's happened every damn time they do a free plugin, only this time it's much worse because the download is huge. Kills downloads also for all paying customers. Idiotic.
Yeah, you either have to get in very early (I got lucky yesterday and got in early on my PC - took a while on my Mac later in the day) or just wait it out a few days. It would be nice if this could be avoided, but my guess is someone looked at the cost of a CDN and decided current-state was good enough.

......... This seems to be basically the Pigments Engine but somewhat simplified or adapted for strings.
My thoughts too.

Sort of, but not exactly. The pigments engines, yes but not adapted for strings. Thats a whole other part of it, two in fact. :) All will become clear soon, I feel.

So this Intro is basically a rompler. I'm guessing the full product will have editing capabilities. Nothing here that isn't common enough in Kontakt libraries. I'll be interested to see if there is actually anything compelling under the hood.

EDIT: If you want to download this fast, skip their crappy Software Center app, and use these links. Downloaded in under 2 minutes on my company's 1G internet:

Installing via the ASC I wasn’t asked which version to install as it usually does so have ended up with the stand alone app, VST 2 and VST 3. Is this a change from their usually install practice? I have not selected silent install.

It's not a Rompler. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rompler

It has synth engines and multi-samples, far more than a rompler.

Wikipedia does not get to decide how this word is commonly used. And its common usage in our world is a synth/sampler that doesn't let you edit patches, but hides them behind macro controls. By your definition Nexus is not a rompler either. Yes, this is definitely a Rompler.

The interface concept is definitely copied from the Native Instruments Play series.
My Maschine software shows 16 pages of max 8 parameters.
When you go to the midi tab and click add controls, you see an even more impressive list.
CPU usage is OK on my M1 MBP.

How is it not a rompler? A rompler can by definition have synthesis capabilities. This plugin plays samples and you have limited modulation options. It's a rompler with a preset synth attached to it. It's quite a lot like Sampletank actually, come to think of it.

It also has virtual analog, wavetable, harmonic, and granular synthesis...a bit more than sampletank! More like Omnisphere....
X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

Yes, but unlike Omni you can’t properly edit them. You can’t create anything from scratch in this Intro version.

The term Rompler does get wildly mis-used - some people still say that’s what Omni is which is ridiculous - but in this case it doesn’t feel inappropriate. Being a Rompler doesn’t invalidate the product itself of course.

Yup. I own everything Arturia and I'm not wasting any more time with this. But super cool of you to post those links.

my only reason to get augmented strings: this counts as one more product in my account, so next time my arturia special offer will be better :)
