midi notes recording with zero length / Waveform 11

The drummer from one of my former bands just got a Roland Command Mesh and we are trying to collaborate remotely. He's using the USB output from his drum module into Waveform 11 on a Windows machine, running Addictive Drums 2 on his midi track.

When he tries to record midi, about 90% of the notes get recorded with a duration of ZERO, so they do not playback (even when he is trying to track he can't hear what he is playing except for ~ 8-10% of notes that do come through).

We tried setting threshold to the lowest possible settings on all pads and it didn't change anything.

Could this be an issue with setting the midi channel? Any other thoughts on what might be at play here and what we could do to fix this? This is driving me crazy.

Out of curiosity, are all these notes on the same channel?

I have experienced 0-length MIDI notes with hardware that outputs across multiple channels: channel 1 records the actual notes (properly), but I can sometimes find ghost notes of 0 length, and they're set to different channels.

I don't know what causes it exactly--I do know that Waveform is faithfully recording what the hardware tells it to. I've solved it by ensuring the hardware is ONLY transmitting on channel 1. However, when I forget to do this, I can usually find one of the 0-length notes, click on it, and then in Waveform select "Select all notes of the same length." Then I hit delete, and it clears all that out.

Not sure this will help you, though, but it's weirdly similar.

Also, I've found that using a MIDI filter to block anything on every other channel doesn't seem to help: it's easier (for me) to ensure the hardware isn't outputting across multiple channels unless I want it to (for example, a sound that is intentionally multitimbral across different channels).

Most percussion-related hardware is inherently multitimbral...so maybe this is part of the problem.
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.

I think this helps. I'll check the drum kit manual to see how the midi output is setup. Thanks.

I have this same problem with the Alesis Surge kit, does anyone know a solution?

No, it is not related to how many or which channels it outputs on.

No, Waveform is not faithfully recording what the hardware tells it to; every other DAW is doing that. Waveform is recording zero-length notes that don't play back. This is the only time I've ever experienced silent zero-length midi notes from any device in any software.

Looking at the data in Midi-OX we can see Note On and Note Off separated by a duration longer than zero.

How do I coerce Waveform to work with a simple midi drum kit?
