Unaspected wrote: Thu Apr 21, 2022 1:56 pm I suspect that a better way to express the waveform j wazza wishes to evoke is a mathematically naïve sawtooth: A ramp from 0 to 1 scaled and shifted to range between -1 and +1.

Whereas a more analogue looking sawtooth could be the same run through an appropriately tuned APF and LPF. The result would require scaling and shifting but if you're doing this you're probably going to have some form of saturation at either or both the oscillator and/or summing buss gain stage. Might benefit from direct bias adjustment though.
yeah i guess thats what i mean, a mathematically perfect saw wave

yeah you can get similar waveforms to analog that way but it still isnt the same with just that, analog waveforms are more complex, and theres also the drift etc
Unaspected wrote: Thu Apr 21, 2022 1:56 pm Plenty of ways to achieve all kinds of waveforms and as BONE suggests, you can arrive at them all with the correct mathematical formulas.
yeah im not disagreeing with that part or that all synths use maths
Drift is part of the oscillator, though of course it relates to the frequency of the waveform and can also be modelled easily enough, if desired. The core shape can be arrived at very simply using the above method. It wouldn't be as clean as additive generation but those filters would provide some continuity, smoothing out the edges in a manner that looks very close to its analogue when observed with some kind of scope function - printing to an array.

It should be hidden and shameful.

Though the walk of shame might be a bit obvious.

And you're never quite the same again.

But you know it was worth it.

This analogy is falling apart.

Okay. I'm done. :D

yeah but i didnt mean just drift, analog waveforms are complex in general with minute details, if it was easy then all VAs would sound perfect

im yet to hear an algorithm that sounds exactly like analog, softube modular is very close, prob the closest, and uhe and others are very close too, close enough that i cant tell any difference at all with many sounds, often just with sustained ones

omnisphere sounds even closer imo but its not algorithmic sound sources, they sampled the wavetables from real analog

Every V/A that generates it's own oscillator waveforms uses mathematics to do it, just as it uses mathematics to make filters and envelopes and everything else. And the people who engineer hardware synths, even analogue ones, use mathematics to work out how it all functions. Mathematics rules everything, be it software or hardware, analogue or digital. It's all maths.
:dog: this misses the point of what a mathematical saw wave means

cant wait for him to reply and be classic bones, swearing, completely missing the point and talking about how great he is

'actually youre wrong, you f**king dumbass idiot, having sex with me is nothing like arguing with a gorilla, arguing with a gorilla is f**king impossible, its ridiculous, and it wouldnt be amusing, gorillas are actually very violent creatures, also, im 10x better at sex than a gorilla and an orangutan put together, but i bet you couldnt even tell the difference between a gorilla and an orangutan, the only difference is that gorillas are f**king dumb idiots and orangutans are f**king idiotic dumbasses, you f**king moron'

You know that you were thinking it the whole time, but, it's clear that I'm the one with a 3rd grade sense of humor around here, it keeps me young. Observe the second post in this thread which now I bet even the OP finally gets.

DX-7 isn't and Korg's M1 didn't have a resonant filter, either, so it's not a V/A. And as those are two of the biggest selling synths of all time, I'd suggest there are plenty of synths that aren't V/As.
this misses the point of what a mathematical saw wave means
No, it's you who is construing something as narrowly as possible, in an attempt to make a point that has no basis in reality. I've asked you to point to any VSTi that uses a perfect sawtooth wave and you have failed to provide one. Look as hard as you like, I doubt you'll find one. Every dev tries to make their sawtooth waves interesting. You're making an assumption that you simply cannot back up.
j wazza wrote: Thu Apr 21, 2022 2:12 pmyeah i guess thats what i mean, a mathematically perfect saw wave
But nobody uses them. They exist only in your head.
yeah you can get similar waveforms to analog that way but it still isnt the same with just that, analog waveforms are more complex, and theres also the drift etc
No, they aren't. They are simpler. Look at DS Thorn, for example and see how simple to complex a sawtooth wave can be using it's spectral synthesis. No analogue synth could hope to match what DS Thorn can do to make the humble sawtooth wave more complex and other traits of analogue oscillators are so easy to emulate that it's not worth mentioning. Look at The Legend, for example, which even models the sonic difference between the 110 Volt US version and the 240 Volt UK/European version. That's a level of detail even the most diehard MiniMoog fan wouldn't notice in the hardware, but it is modelled accurately in Synapse's software emulation. So to argue that digital synths use mathematically perfect waveforms makes no sense.
j wazza wrote: Thu Apr 21, 2022 2:42 pm if it was easy then all VAs would sound perfect
It's as easy as anything - just sample an analogue oscillator. Build a wavetable to capture drift and any other nuances you like and away you go. Easiest thing in the world, which is why I am just as likely to use a sample based synth, like Concept or Hexeract, as I am a modelled V/A like Union or bx_oberhausen. And neither you nor anyone else would be able to tell the difference.
im yet to hear an algorithm that sounds exactly like analog
"Analog (sic)" what? MiniMoog, or SEM or Juno6? Because if you can tell the difference between a MiniMoog and The Legend in all but the most extreme, non-musical settings, I'll be very, very impressed. In fact, I'd be impressed enough if you could tell the difference between the sound of a MiniMoog and a Juno 6 when you hear them.
