" retiring" in the way it is often portrayed as doing nothing is a terrible idea at any age. Spending more time doing things you love without getting paid (if you can) is a better way to think of it.

EA never really interested me because they sounded too sterile and were too expensive. At the moment, they are quite cheap and possibly worth considering?
I wouldn't put Valhalla on the same level of quality, but at least for electronic music I find them more suitable.
Even better (for me) is actually only Relab or the Eventide Reverbs like "Blackhole" or "Ultraverb".
"Good" is such a thing, especially with reverbs. I know some people who still prefer the older Lexicon bundle above all others. Although I'm sure many agree that the newer developments from Michael with EA are of higher quality (but well...that doesn't mean you personally like them more).

What about the Eventide reverbs do you like? What are you using them for?

How would you rate their realism vs. PhoenixVerb, Verberate2, and the like? Is Ultraverb more suitable for realistic spaces than Blackhole? I’ve always assumed Blackhole is more of a “special effect” reverb.

I like Ultraverb, it's very general purpose. I end up using it more than I use Verb3 which surprises me. I also like T-Verb because it has a simple mic placement input that can be automated.

All in all I would say that I use Eventide reverbs more than any other brand. This includes Ultraverb, T-Verb, Blackhole, and Mangleverb.

Of course, DAW updates never break plugins on Windows. Nor do new CPUs (in any given architecture) ever break software. Come on. If your argument is: "Don't upgrade if everything works" then that argument applies just as well to any hardware architecture. Just don't buy a new Mac/PC, and use the older software, and your setup won't break. This has nothing to do with Mac v. Windows.

And seriously, the term "abandonware" has a well-established meaning, and it has nothing to do with the emotional state of those who use said plugins. What a silly argument.

If you knew that your $300 investment in a reverb plugin (were you so foolish enough to buy it at full price) was for a piece of software that would never be updated again, would you have spent that money?

Yes, Blackhole is rather a supernaturally big effect sound ;) But it's also exactly what brings an often boring synth sound to life. Blackhole is my most used reverb/effect plugin and I have it on almost every synth sound.
But Blackhole is not suitable for realistic rooms, that works better with Ultraverb.
For a bit of "3D" I also use a plate reverb like ValhallaPlate or Arturia Plate 140.

Otherwise, EAs sounds the most realistic, but I didn't like Phoenix on electronic sounds at all.
R2 or Nimbus were better (but were quite expensive at the time).

I'm probably going to get the Anthology XII intro before it ends. The Tverb is one I don't have right now. I'm looking forward to what it can do for realistic room sounds.

I echo this sentiment. I have a number of different plates, but I really like little plate from soundtoys for a quick, yep, it's a plate, and yep, it sounds good plugin.

For plates I use the Arturia Plate-140 and I also picked up the PSP 2445 EMT for early digital plates.

Yes on the PSP. I'm not as much of a fan of Aturia's efforts. It's probably bias.

I like Arturia quite a lot for “real” plates. I have the IK Sunset Sound and Fame, but I prefer Arturia’s. I use the PSP EMT when I want a vintage digital plate. I use them primarily on snares.

I’ve found that one or the other always works well on my source material, but usually not both.

Once again, Liquidsonics R2 and free Lexicon etc simulations to place into along with EAs does it for me. Otherwise I use delays

i must say the ircam flux is the best I've ever heard in plugin land. for real spaces.
Perhaps because it can sound super clean.
but they also have a 3d space i never heard before.

not really marketed as a reverb, but that’s kind of what it is - dearVR music or pro are kind of cool because In addition to normal reverb stuff, they can do 3d stuff. and you can get it for $31 (or less depending on PA sales….)
