There's a new update out (v1.5.5) with a Round-Robin voice mode option. Good stuff!

In case anyone is wondering where this feature is:

It took me a second to find it the first time too. At first I was expecting it to be next to the Poly 1 and Poly 2 buttons.

It seems like a while back multiple people suspected the VCO's are not free-running. Was this ever confirmed or changed in an update?

Okay, well I answered my own question. I downloaded the demo. Playing a notes with 2 slightly detuned saw waves shows that the oscillators do appear to be free running. Each oscillator definitely does not reset to the same phase at each key press.

Some synths I'm like "Grrr this thing really needs to trigger the oscillators from this specific phase position", but the J8 was never one of them.

Ok, maybe once when I first used it, didn't last long. Never even think about it now

I think if the tools are really good, I keep coming back. If you can't settle you're doing something wrong. I would never give away my workhorse synths. And *all* TAL synths are in constant use here. They sound great, inspire, and are quite easy to setup, perfect for a working musician who needs a quick workflow to channel creativity.
Good enough cure for my gas to not revisit this post from 18 months ago until now. :)

Analog Renaissance has been working on new IR3109’s, as has Alfa.

edit: System-80's solution isn't IC level compatible, just a reimplementation in a sub-circuit using a modern OTA, so that wouldn't suffice for purists at all.
Shouldn't be any more expensive than other re-issues of synth chips. It's not like the IR3109 in particular is some kind of super complex chip. You can buy an SSI2144 filter chip for about $2. Of course since they sell to many different synth manufacturers it does help offset the cost. Anyway, what "people want" from Roland are clearly workstations and digital synths. That's where the real money is. Those who actually care about analog vs digital are just a small minority.
Take a single oscillator, producing a drone. Send it to the wave shaper, altering the tone.
This can be a triangle, Sawtooth or a square. Modulate the pulse width, nobody will care

I'm sure this has been asked before, but which is the better sounding emulation? Tal or Arturia?

I heard Tal has more authentic features. Is it easy to recreate authentic hardware patches on either?

Post

Best to try for yourself..
for me Tal all the way, not only because of the authentic features.

Tal sounds like the Jupiter. Arturia sounds like an Arturia emulation (not bad just sounds like Arturia).

I rate the TAL as the overall best. I’ve also got the Roland Cloud and Arturia versions. TAL sounds the best and Is a joy to use.

It may well be that I´d like it more than the real thing. Who know?

If the original only transmitted CCs for each parameter you could use one as a controller for the software. Like when I use my Prophet 10 as a RePro controller.
