TIME IS UP!
Wow! So many entries!

Voting form will be up later, when we have collated all the entries, so watch this space...

Welcome to all the new participants. I hope you all found the challenge rewarding and fun. Don't forget we are only halfway there as all participants must vote. And this month voting will be quite a challenge with so many entries. You will have from now to the 15th to listen, comment and vote on all the other entries. Good luck!

Oh, please also remember to make your entries downloadable on soundcloud. Thanks :)

I'm so sorry, I couldn't participate. I even had an entertaining track started, but I have to save my little family. I'll be back...
(I'm sure, I've saved myself from voting, too!)

Thanks, Julian and Flux! With so many new musicians, I'm extra sorry I couldn't make it, but I sure hope many of you will stick around for many more rounds to come! :phones:

Holy carp that's a lot of entries! Ok, It's gonna be the round of first impressions from me this time! :-D

Post

Yeah probably more of first impressions for more people than usual. That's fine. That's how it is in the real world. You have maybe 15 seconds and then probably never again when someone is just looking for new music.

I will still try to give every song many listens. With plenty of sleep inbetween listens. I won't vote till after the 10th. The most rewarding music to me is often music that I didn't like at all the first or second time. Of course commercial music nowadays is designed to be immediately accessible.. and kind of simplistic. It has been quantified that melodies are getting simpler. And it's being done on purpose, because there's so much music out there, you better sound good the first listen.

But I also have a job where I can listen to music all day. And I also drive 80 minutes everyday.
But the listening at work is on cheap earbuds that don't reproduce the low end very well, so if that was my only way of listening I'd be missing a good bit of Jasinski's track for example. I will listen to every track on earbuds, in my car (loud) and on quality headphones. Probably not every track on my JVC speakers at home though.

FYI to the new people, the commenting can be the most useful part of this for a lot of us. Try to remember most comments are subjective. You may think there is something objectively wrong when actually the artist quite purposely wanted it to sound exactly like that.

I really appreciate people saying negative things... for the most part. They're kind of taking a chance... someone may get angry and give them a low score. Of course it should NOT work that way. But every time you leave a negative comment there is sadly a chance it will piss the person off. Again I really appreciate the people who do so anyway.

Finally just FYI when the results are announced they also link a spreadsheet that shows every persons' vote for each track.

Let's put it this way, rather authentic constructive criticism than obviously exaggerated pseudo-greatness-comments. Not to say, every comment falls into this category, but there are some. I decided to make it easy and blocked comments on my tracks until voting ended... so nobody must feel urged to come up with comments. rather listen. vote. next.
Same as I do ... if I have something meaningfull to say, I might consider placing a comment ... mostly I do not. Funny game is to match "sentiment" to actual scores ... I bet standard AIs would fail.

I totally understand disabling comments. There's plenty of good reasons to do so. I thought about doing that myself this time as I REALLY like my track and not too sure I want to hear people tell me how they don't. Also, yes, there can be this feeling of comments being carefully calculated in certain ways. There is a whole psychology going on there that... it's kind of preferable to just not think about too much personally. I think too much about how our subconscious directs us. BTW I wish yours were open so I could say how much I like your tracks. I really liked your first 157 entry by the way. I blasted it in my car on repeat while just sitting in my driveway a couple times.

Yeah, I always feel awkwardness, when I read "I really like this track", from someone, who still won't hit "like" on the track! :ud:
I've been wondering, if people are just scared that someone would find that track in their "liked list" then?

As for comments, man...I find them to be wonderful tools and while they may influence listeners, who are unclear about what to feel about a track, they often are golden in value for the musician and the chances that someone may come back at some later point after voting seems slim to me. Especially those, who could use some helpful advice, would completely miss out on the chance to get some feedback. Any encouraging feedback may then be even more valuable, too.

I hope, musicians here will maintain courage and care enough to keep comments enabled on their tracks and understand that extra value they represent for the OSC experience. :phones:

They are distributed through AWAL, and I do get paid, and AWAL gets their cut, all under All Rights Reserved. I have also produced a video for one of my tracks that was released on my first Album, which I put on youtube under my Gorgor Gathgorgorgor youtube challenge. AWAL got the video demonitized, which is ok with me, but it's still up for all to enjoy, and I still get my 85% of one 10th of a penny when it gets played on Spotify or any of the other services AWAL has distributed to. long story short, It hasn't been an issue for me, and really shouldn't be for any of us, IMHO.
Nice good to hear. I will check you out later and have followed your SoundCloud to do so. I currently have a pro SoundCloud membership for the next year so have been trying out the Repost service for distribution which seems ok but with a lot of back end features that seem to have been in development for a while and are still not done. I had been thinking of doing an extended version of my entry here and maybe even a remix (with banned effects) but have not had time to do that so will probably just release it how it is after the competition is over.

Here is the description, it is also in the comments in Soundcloud.

Five Instances of MG-1
Daw is Bitwig.
Each track has Bitwig delay and reverb.
Master effect is Tax Reverb 2.

I've thought of doing this as well but didn't know if it would be frowned upon. I may join you.

Here is my opinion on this:
When I put the first like in SC it was... "Oh, the track has been added to some "my library", so it's not just a heart that the author of the track will see! :o " The fact is that (for me) there are two types of "like".
The first is when the track is perfectly made both technically and musically! Yay! Wow! Yes, some of them get likes and comments, some only comments, which, however, contain more than a small red heart of a non-anatomical shape can tell you! :hihi:
The second type... I don't care if it's in the last place or in the middle, or it's even a short WIP for Syncla-X, it hooked me personally, made me feel something more than "Great job, mate!", what I personally am on my (subjective-presubjective and completely, absolutely, totally unprofessional) look I hear notes of genuine talent. Music that I can listen to with my soul and not with my ears, and it doesn't matter through which crappy headphones it was made and listened to. This music carries pristine magic, even if it resonates with only one person. There are a few less tracks like this for me, and of course they always get a like and the highest rating, this is my piece of bias and a way to bribe me)
I agree with you (and others with a similar point of view) about the usefulness of comments. Also, in my opinion, over time, by the way a person communicates, even in topics, it is possible to understand his psychology, at least in terms of his possible reactions to comments. Of course, there is the most unpleasant type of people: "Time bomb" - those who until the last try to be friendly and nicely, and then it breaks through... This mask works well in many modern societies, but hides the opposite and does not stand up to real sincerity. But in any case, I believe that a personalized approach to each person, taking into account his character, is the best behavior model for both OSC and life in general.
And yes, I hope that everything will be fine for you and your family! Take as much time as you need, and we'll listen to your previous tracks in the meantime!
