All hardware effects except for what lives inside my UAD Apollo and my AxeFX. I tried. I tried general multi effects, analog and digital. I tried modular digital effects boxes. Specialized stuff like a Chase Bliss MOOD. They all sounded fantastic. I’d dig in and get it all sorted out and experiment with them a lot for about a week each… and then completely ignore them. I don’t know why, as I have no issues with hardware instruments. I just can’t get behind working with effects out of the box. Even the AxeFX is all run by it’s editor program. Last week I decided to finally get rid of them. All I have left is my Roland Torcido, which I may end up keeping if I can’t get at least $200 for it. It does CV nicely to my Dominion 1.

In software… I think I’ll say the Uhbik plugin bundle. They all sound great, but there’s something about the interfaces that sort of doesn’t quite work like I expect them to. I’ll check out the presets, think they sound great and then try making my own and get a bit frustrated and then go to something else. I just got the Eventide H9 bundle and I can instantly get what I’m looking for with them. I don’t really know what’s up with the Uhbiks.

I’m also having trouble getting into BYOME. Something about the interface is putting me off and this is coming from a guy who loves MXXX.

got a plug-in you love but just don’t use?

Before I'll answer, may I ask this question :

Who is, in your opinion, the most beautiful woman that you've never seen ?...

Or, to paraphrase the infamous quantum mechanics conundrum ("If a tree falls in the forest, and there’s nobody around to hear, does it make a sound?") :
If an extremely good sounding plug is never being used, and there’s nobody to evaluate it over a prolonged period of time, can it still be considered "The Best" ?

Is quantum mechanics the ultimate Koan?
Just reading „How should I know what I think, before I hear what I say“

I'm still pondering the notion of what is the best word to describe a very hard, unsolvable problem (or a riddle) - Conundrum or Koan ...

And you'd be happy to be paying 30% more for everything or would you expect the dev to make do with 30% less revenue?

Yeah, I used a PA voucher to buy it cheap, thinking how amazing it would be, but I haven't touched it at all since I paid for it. It may come into its own when we've recorded some vocals for our next album but right now I have no need of it.

As to the topic, I am always surprised at the importance of effects to so many people around here. I try to avoid them as far as possible, beyond what can be saved with a synth patch. They tend to mess up mixes and ruin everything. Saturation/overdrive/distortion, well applied, can actually improve clarity but everything else tends to get in its way.

if this means having less crapware on my system, then yes. it would be worth it for me.
but in the end i'm also perfectly fine with just downloading files and updates from the websites manually. but i'm not having millions of plugins, so it's perfectly doable anyway.
additionally - in my experience at least, the download services are often slower and also more unreliable (meaning more interruptions) than what i'm used to from downloading stuff with my internet browser. might of course just have been more traffic, but still
automatic download and update services often also do complete installs with no options to deselect stuff like AAX, AU, or other versions i'd never use, but in the end, this can also happen to you with some manual installers, especially on Mac

eh? but the installer is really easy to use and do updates through...

(especially if you own Komplete)
in principle it's alright, even though it's still bloatware to me, especially if many developers do their own thing.
nowadays this should be handled with the app store of the OS natively and not a crap ton of individual downloaders

i'm actually quite happy that none of the plugs i really need don't require such intrusive ways to your system

but i of course get it when people find this convenient. it's just not for me
Weirdo! You'd rather have Microsoft Store manage your plug ins, including sample libraries, than some custom installers that you can configure with the locations that you want? It simply wouldn't work.

I need libraries on a different drive, some things in program files, and other things in VST folders so the DAW picks them up. Which OS store would mange that correctly?

And again, the NI installer works really well. I can see what needs updates and it's one click to install new products or updates. When you have Komplete and don't want/need everything installed it's very very helpful.

Well i found NI‘s installer particularly slow that‘s also pretty unreliable,
Also, this way you could easily have dozens of different stores/installers/DL managers on your system, especially if you have other interests too, like graphics design, or gaming.
I don‘t game on computers, but if I’m not mistaken, you could easily have 3, 4 or more stores on your system just for gaming alone, since everyone of the bigger developers who can afford this wants to cook it‘s own soup. . If you’re fine with that, it’s ok of course. To me it’s garbage collecting on your (i mean mine of course) system

Sound is made inside the brain of an organism that has the capacity to hear, so the answer is definitely a hard no. That said, it would be hard to find a forest where there wasn’t some sort of organism capable of hearing near by. Maybe after a fire.

You just failed in the Koan test. You need to reflect about it another 5 years…
