When I load Waveform 11.5, I see an icon appear for ASIO4ALL but Waveform then stops loading - no sign of it in Task Manager. If I move the mouse over the ASIO4ALL icon, the icon goes away. No pop-up text with name of program (took a while to confirm it was indeed from ASIO4ALL).

If I load in another program that uses ASIO4ALL, like Magix Samplitude Music Studio, Bitwig, or Guitar Pro, it loads ASIO4ALL without issues, and works fine. If I exit the other program and THEN start Waveform, Waveform loads ASIO4ALL and works fine. If I then restart Windows, the problem shows up again. It seems Waveform skips something in the call to ASIO4ALL that the other programs do, and once ASIO4ALL has run in a Windows session, that extra something is no longer needed to restart it.

I've tried this after a clean reboot, with a busy system (Opera browser and spreadsheets and other stuff open). Same results. So I don't think it's a memory issue. I've tried with all projects closed and with one or two left open on previous exit -- no difference. Reset inputs and outputs in Audio settings. Nothing. I've reinstalled ASIO4ALL and Waveform a few times, using different versions. Did full uninstall/reboot/reinstall of ASIO4ALL. Nothing changes. If I tell Waveform to use Windows Audio instead of ASIO4ALL it loads fine, but I can no longer get Windows Audio to recognize both inputs on my interface (maybe it never did, I've always used ASIO4ALL). I tried another audio interface and different USB ports, still the same issue. It may be related to a Windows update back then.

The fact that I can't find lots of other complaints about this tells me its a problem in my system. Tracktion Support suggested I need to disconnect an external hard drive, but none were connected. I have since connected and disconnected USB hard drives and flash drives, no difference. A follow-up email with more detail was never answered by Support. I'm worried that if I upgrade to 12 it will do the same thing. That extra 5 minutes to load another program, exit, and then load Waveform (sometimes needing 2 or 3 cycles to get it to work) is a real creativity killer.

Is anyone else seeing this? Any ideas what may be going wrong or what I can change?
I'm on Windows 10 Home (up to date), Waveform 11.5.17 / 11.5.18, ASIO4ALL 2.14 / 2.15, Guitar Pro 7.5, Magix Sampl. Music Studio 2015, Bitwig Studio demo 4.2.2, Bitdefender antivirus. It has all worked well for over a year, then stopped. Thanks for any help !!!

If it was working then stopped, then its more likely to be an issue with your system.

Try uninstalling Waveform and ASIO4All, and then deleting (by renaming the folder, so you have a bsckup) anything related to them in Documents and %appdata%
Then reinstall them.

If that doesnt work, do a disk and system check.

Thanks, whytrabbyt. I did these steps and many more last April. The only thing I didn't do was uninstall Waveform 11 for fear of losing my setups and projects.

So I tried everything again today, including uninstalling Waveform. Everything starts up with no issues even after another reboot. So uninstalling Waveform was the key, thank you!

New question: Is there any way to get tell Waveform how to find all my projects again? I see no way to do that. I tried creating a new project in an old project's folder, of course that doesn't work. I tried creating a new project in a new folder, closed project, copied everything from older project's folder into the new folder. Close, but all sound files are missing. If I click on a track with missing file and then use "locate source files" I can pull them in, but they are not in correct position (left-to-right) in track so wrong timing relative to song. Can't rely on my memory for dozens of songs to get things pieced back together.

I can backup my hard drive, restore it to where it was a week ago, go into Waveform and either backup or archive each project, copy all that to another disk, then restore my disk to where it is now, figure out how import the backups or archives... Is there a recommended way to recover my work?

Many thanks, Watchful, that did the trick. On the several projects I checked out, everything seemed back to normal (whatever that is for my music!). What a relief, nothing's lost.

And, I'm learning enough to be dangerous, will try to clean up and reorganize projects now. Might even go for Waveform 12, migrate all projects and get rid of all the older Waveform/Tracktion installations.

Sure wish all the file management functions were documented someplace, at least it's no longer scary to try things since I've learned about Archiving and recovering folders.
