I really dont get the pricing on Reverb.com. How sane is it?

It´s really funny that many people seem not to have understood yet that informations from the internet are treacherous. There´s a massive amount of attempts to manipulate peoples perception and assessments out there.

It's a thing that I have observed for quite a while now. Used prices getting higher and higher (astronomically high in some areas), and "want to buy" offers ridiculously low.

Am I surprised considering the general development in social behavior? Nope, not at all.

I just hope that no one buys for such prices. I'm under no illusion though that quite a few do.

Stating the obvious, but it’s worth keeping in mind:

Prices on Reverb are prices that nobody has (yet) agreed to buy. Listings below the market value will sell more quickly than listings above the market value, so a snapshot is biased higher than the “real” prices. Check the sale price history to get a better idea of the market value.

Conversely, eBay auction prices are generally lower than the market value because more bids could still come in (and there is often a flurry at the end). I find it useful to follow auctions for a few weeks and get a sense of what things I am interested in really go for.

That's not exactly true. The few remaining sellers that list with low opening bids
VERY often end these "no reserve auctions" early because they don't like the way
the bidding's going. I've experienced more cancelled bids in the last year than in
the ten previous years.

It's not just Reverb. I've been buying and selling on eBay for over twenty years. It's broken. Along with the rest of the economy. It's difficult to buy on eBay now for the same reasons. Many sellers are listing auctions with starting bids that are so ridiculously high they are simply pricing themselves out of the market AND adding ridiculously excessive shipping charges on top of that. I see these same items being listed over and over....some times for years. If it didn't sell the first FIVE times.....guess what?

I'm sure as f#ck not going to buy used gear ANYWHERE if it costs more than a new unit from a dealer. On the other hand selling is also difficult as people simply don't have extra money lying around these days. I'm hoping that when things get back to "normal", (whatever that is), that the overall economy will stabilize and eBay will become more viable again. I've got to get some gear moving!

eBay has been broken for years. I even tried to close my account with them. Gave them written notice and guess what, they never did anything because they could give two shits about the people who use their site.
That's what drove me to Reverb, and I got my pro3 there.

I may not have been clear enough. I meant that the prices one SEES on eBay auctions are lower than the market rate, because the auctions are not finished yet. These cancelled auctions (and, similarly, auctions with an unreasonable secret reserve price) are part of the problem.

My favorite thing is when Reverb sellers have a ridiculously overpriced product (like $200 for a product that usually goes for less than half that), then add an even more absurd shipping price ($130) for something like a guitar pedal or a tiny Roland Boutique synth.

That said, I have no idea if people are buying those absurdly overpriced items, but I do notice that many of them seem to stay listed for months. That's not to say that there aren't deals to be had. I've gotten some great deals, but they go quickly, so I check it often in I'm in the market for a specific synth or something.

I think it's a strategy to artificially drive up prices and the mystique. They put up and insane price, then make a big cut (but still on crazy levels), then someone comes and give them an offer and it gets sold.

Have you seen the prices of Ensoniq ASRs? The prices are beyond mental. You can find a decent looking ASR - often barebones - for 20k!
