My musical hobby goal is simple, create some music to stand as a legacy once I am gone from this existence. It is hopeful to consider, that many years from now, someone would stumble across a tune and enjoy listening.

... those "oh that sounds cool" moments.
I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

I share your feeling! I would have written that myself, but thought to be too... Worried ppl might find it too elitist or something...

I ran professional recording studios for decades and worked with many signed artist, record company's and hobbyist.

First I would point put that a very small percentage of musicians ever get signed.
Getting signed is not in any way a guarantee that you will ever make a dime.

One musician told me that before getting signed to a major, they could choose the studio they wanted, produce the music as they liked, and do it all for a reasonable price.
After they got signed he said it was $150 an hour in an LA studio the label picked and it all came out of any profits.
He said the pressure was overwhelming.

Another artist told me that when he signed to a major label he had to put up his home, car and everything he owned.

They gave him a couple-few hundred thousands dollars to release his first CD.
The label had nothing to loose, he had everything.

Many musicians chase that dream of success when in reality not that many actually get it and many loose more then they gain.

Not having all that over your head is a good thing most of the time.

it's alright, we told you what to dream.

Well those goals get adjusted once in a while. I think setting goals is also about being realistic. For instance don't picture yourself as a superstar DJ on the mainstage at the worlds biggest event... If that's the bar you set then prepare to get dissapointent fairly quick... If you set realistic goals you might have a sens of success earlier on, which might work in a motivating way :)

But about my personal goals. I once started as a bedroom DJ with a simple DJ controller. My dream was to perform somewhere.. anywhere. Which I did a couple of times after participating in some DJ contests.

Then my musical endeavours where a bit low for a while, after which I was more invested in music production and DJ'ing in other genres (trance, techno, progressive). My musical goals then where to DJ on an event that was aimed at this niche as well as having my own signed release at a label.

Fast forward a couple of years, I now release quite frequently and have spinned at some of those 'niche' events (One time even a 5h DJ set), so now I'm aiming at specific labels, plays or features of tracks I produce when it comes to goals. Perhaps a TLDR way of saying it is: Seeing my own tracks getting played on some big show, event or by a big name gives me really that 'achievement unlocked' feeling. :)

Though performing at an outdoor festival is more or less a coninuing goal/dream of mine still... :)

no goals, no hobby...my music is to bring peace to my heart and soul, and has done so quite well for over 5 decades.

i believe in this context, peace for the mind, is a goal.

although, as dasen will never respond, we shall never know!!!

for me, it's classed as a hobby because it's something i enjoy, that i have no professional goals in.
but, i do it, because as i said, i don't know what else i could or would want to do?
by which i don't mean, i haven't thought about it, ive tried and enjoyed many "hobby" activities, but none call to me when im not doing them, none are brought to mind during any non musical moments, by maybe something that someone says, will inspire my mind, to create a scene, which then i fill with a soundtrack, or wake me up in the middle of the night, with some weird idea of how to make some weird noise i just dreamed...

in essence, it's part of me.

however! while having no professional goals, i have somehow still managed to "make money" :o
i have a few "patrons" i believe the word is, (not patreon) who ocassionally send me money, in support, to keep me going.
i tell them, id keep going anyway keep your money. but they won't listen.
not that im getting rich :hihi: but it helps to buy odd bits ocassionally or help pay for the shrubbery. :D

but i do what i do because it's who/what i am.

we are what we are.

Performing my music live isn't really a goal of mine. I got an invite to do it a couple of times, but wasn't ready and declined. I like having my non-portable studio set up, and having all the time in the world to prepare for my recorded improvisations, and then being able to edit them afterward to some extent. And no pressure.

But then, I've already had the live performer experience. High school orchestra and jazz ensemble in the 80s aside, I was a semi-professional taiko drummer around 2010-2012. I've done "outdoor festival with big crowds" thing a few times in various weather conditions, and a few dozen other gigs of various sizes and types. (A rich kid's party at the lake, international festivals, concert halls a couple of times, school events, street fairs, a Chinese New Year event at a casino even though taiko is Japanese... my first gig was at a conference for women who are Christian ministers who also seemed to be very drunk...) It's pretty rewarding but also very physically demanding, and the rehearsals and practice/training very time-consuming. It didn't leave me with the energy or time to create my own music. So I'm glad I did it and also glad that I quit.

To enjoy my hobby.

I'm still far away from that.
Same here.
But I would say more.
I want to finish as much as possible.
Starting something without trying to finish it isn't cool.
And I want to do it... yes, perfectly.

Full dismantling of the ideological neo-liberal hegemony.

Failing that, write a few catchy songs now and again.

Sex, drugs and rock n roll.

Or some pleasant green tea to sip with my musical noodlings.

EDIT: DAW / home studio related nonsense aside, I perform in about 3-6 percussion festivals / concerts most years (not 2019-2020), so there's that outlet too.

That's if you exclude connotation; collecting stamps is a hobby - me making music isn't.

I see your point but I see it more as an effect, a goal would suggest that it was intentional. Yes I said it was "to bring", I misspoke as isnt always intentional. I have said this many times, my favorite times playing were the accidental ones, when I just picked up my guitar for a second at it's 90 minutes later and I am just alive, no other way to say it, I am just alive. I read the question as musical goals, I do grow musically but growth is natural and inevitable.

My music itself, as in what I write and play is strictly for me to play, I think after close to 20 years here and so few posts in the cafe that this is evident. I am not a showman, I'm not into bands, I am not overly demonstrative with my music, it's my music.

I'm not sure what would have happened if I dint have music after my accident, I had just moved to a new apartment with one guitar (Kramer Ritchie Sambora) and no decent amp (a solidstate made by Charvel, total crap). An uncle had passed the summer before, he left me some money, I took 1000 bux from it and gave my dad the rest, bought a Yamaha MT-4X 4 track, a Lyons P-bass knock off and a Yamaha RX-17 drum machine from the store (daddy's) years later I would work at, for 1000 dollars. Later the 4 track was replaced with an Akai DPS-12 and of course the rest is obvious, I got GAS.

Those first few months after the accident I do not remember sun at all, everything is dark...I remember that latest 4 track studio well and I credit that with a lot, even meeting Denise.

My music is just a huge part of my life, sure sometimes there is a goal, sometimes it's a distraction, sometimes it's savage amusement, sometimes it's a coping skill...like you say, what else would I do?

Of course when the house is done, likely next year that pretty backyard of mine and the coast of Maine is gonna be rockin...here my words it will be summer, it will be beautiful in Maine, there will be plenty of space and this is just an open invitation to all to come jam downeast.

My neighbors grandson just started playing banjo, I told him if he learns the banjo parts we will play Dueling Banjos together (me on guitar of course, though I would l love to encourage him more in a Bela Fleck thing, it aint my place)

FTR I have never played guitar for Holly, that is how personal it really is for me.
