Why has this thread turned into "Complete this sentence with Song Lyrics" thread ?
@_@!!

Anyway, I make music for reasons (and goals) that tend to elude me.

Speaking to and speaking for are very different things. But your assumption is pretty close to the mark, I am completely unmoved by the lyrics to songs. The emotion comes from the music and the vocal delivery.

This makes sense, music is the mood, the lyrics are the event the mood is about, you just get the mood. That’s fine, but it makes you completely unqualified to comment on the impact lyrics can have on people. In much the same way I would never think to comment on opera, because I like only the most obvious well known operas, it’s not of much interest to me.

But I'm people, who's to say my experience isn't typical and you are the outlier? If you look at the lyrics to the vast majority of songs out there, particularly successful ones, it's hard to imagine anyone actually listens to the words. Most of them are at about the same level as a Wiggles song.

Ah. That would explain the popularity of singer songwriters like Carol King through the 70's with many slightly less pronounced returns after

Now I understand the rather irrational anger I have witnessed from people after realizing large chunks of Cocteau twins songs were just phonetics and had no meaning

I'm willing to bet that this is a spectrum and that it varies a bit even within most. I suspect that you are a bit of an outlier, a bookend for the people that are into the likes of Tool for the lyrics. I imagine most people make some connection to lyrics some of the time and at other times are blissfully ignorant, or even, misinterpret the lyrics and are moved by their incorrect interpretation.

interesting that you still choose to write lyrics.
dunno about where you are, but here, any group of 2 or more teenage girls, are singing along to something.
while i agree, the lyrics can often be, one line repeated, with some vibrato gymnastics thrown in, but they're singing the words.

how often do you hear someone say "oh you must have heard it..." then singing/speaking a line to you?
