…that doesn’t cost a small fortune.
Is there a plug-in/library that’s generally considered to be the go to for quality strings? Is Kontakt a must for strings these days? (I don’t own it)
Thanks

There isn't a single one, you do not need Kontakt (VSL, Spitfire and Orchestral Tools have their own Samplers).
This question is better suited for the vi-control.net forum

Thanks, and thanks for the links! I'd not stumbled upon any of them during in my searches.
I guess hoping that there was a single go-to solution was a bit naive of me really.

I forgot to mention, that you can also buy parts of OT Libraries (like Berlin Strings or as part of one of the Arks) if you do not need all instruments/ensembles/articulations:
'Instruments'-Tab

...
All (better) free ones you know?
Solo instruments:
Alpine Project, needs full Kontakt:

String ensembles:
BBC Discover

Project Sam's free orchestra, that works with the free Kontakt player

Yeah there is a lot of options, and you already got some nice links to look at. If I were to make my own personal list by budget, it would be something like this:
High budget = Spitfire Chamber Strings
Mid budget = Cinematic Studio Strings
Low budget = 8dio Century Strings
These are all full, dedicated string libraries but it still comes down to what you personally feel sounds the best. Try and listen to various demos and see what hits what you are looking for

Thanks Akora! Will take a look. I'm aiming more mid budget, but I could maybe stretch for the right library.

SONIVOX was part of a $1 deal on PluginBoutique but is currently hovering around $50-60 (lower end). For Kontakt libraries if you wanted to get it, you could opt for Action Strings 2 for $299.

For solo strings, this one.

Group strings are coming soon, too, according to their Facebook.
