Why has Kate Bush’s “Running up that hill” taken off. Is it because the lyrics connect with people, the great tune/sound design or just because it is being used in the very popular Stranger Things and any song would have got a similar boost?
Curious what you folks think.

It's been covered more than once since I first connected with it,which was the day the single came out, because the woman who wrote 'Sat in Your Lap' 'Leave it Open' & 'Pull Out the Pin' had a new record out and I had to have it.
The other versions are different enough but still have the impact of the lines in the chorus

Totally to do with Stranger Things, it's always been a quality tune and now people (maybe younger ones or americans?) are hearing it they're connecting with it.

Jesus it's been covered a lot but I found the one I remembered. I was hooking up with a 20 something ...pre hipster or hipster that loved 'Running Up That Hill' by Chromatics
It's another song with a message that really connects with the LGBT

The college radio crowd knew who she was
She had a flash of visibility on SNL with 'Them Heavy People' that I vaguely remembered, but it was The Dreaming that connected with the alternative scene

It just occurred to me one meaning could be 'I'd like to swap places so I could fail upwards like a str8 cis white male from an upper class part of America'

Never bothered me, but I do understand their ire. I was incandescent with rage when I was informed that in his 1985 smash hit, Paul Young did not in fact sing, "Every time you go away, You take a piece of meat with you."foosnark wrote: Sat Jun 11, 2022 9:46 pmPeep-oh, peach blow, pandora, pompadourmelomood wrote: Sat Jun 11, 2022 1:24 am Now I understand the rather irrational anger I have witnessed from people after realizing large chunks of Cocteau twins songs were just phonetics and had no meaning

Follow with the girl I couldn't even horn around
Let me tell you now
Oh, baby, I will need a woman’s pants (to show you that I love you)
Won't you please let meee vacuum your heart?
Ooh, darlin, I won't fly to Mexico (Mexico baby).
But now can I seed any girl? Uh-huh
. . . I think our brains have a deep need to find meaning in anything

The words don't matter at all, beyond the fact of their existence. FFS, most of the people who listen to our music don't even speak English (at least as a first language) and I enjoy a Die Krupps or Rammstein song sung in German as much as one sung in English, more if it's a better song.
That said, about 20 years ago we had this idea of doing a version of Send Me an Angel in German but I just couldn't bring myself to sing those words. Interestingly, I'm more than happy to do it these days.
That's interesting beccause here in Australia she was totally mainstream, from Wuthering Heights, through Babooshka and Running Up That HIll.melomood wrote: Sat Jun 11, 2022 10:46 pmShe had a flash of visibility on SNL with 'Them Heavy People' that I vaguely remembered, but it was The Dreaming that connected with the alternative scene

The only tracks I could think of by her that were mainstream round here
was her voice sampled by Utah Saints and 'This Woman's Work' because it was in that movie about a couple of heterosexuals that get married and have a kid that I think The Breakfast Club guy directed
