They don't sound so different that you'd say they were not both the same kind of music, the same genre. They are far more similar than they are different and I find it hard to believe that anyone would like one and not the other, which is why I find the sub-genrefication of EDM so completely idiotic. But to me they are both boring. They don't go anywhere, I keep waiting for something new to happen but nothing does. They're basically a single musical idea, overlaid with cliches and stretched out to 7 minutes. I'd be bored out of my mind before I got to the third track of either artist's repetoire, I'm sure.
The second one sounds like they'd being listening to these guys but didn't quite get what was going on -
This song uses similar musical devices without falling into cliche with it. Or maybe it's so old it simply predates the cliches?

Both of those Goa tracks are boring as hell to listen to but the intent was never to just sit in a room listening to them either. Simon Posford (Hallucinogen) has done far better work with Shpgongle.
Astral Projection were the absolute kings of Goa.
bass drum in sounds terrible to me now but the song still holds up just fine 25 years later.
Also (3 years later):
Both of these songs definitely go somewhere, especially Visions of Nasca. Nice change at 3:40 where its totally full-on Goa. Then a change about a minute later. Followed by another another minute later. But again, these songs were made for parties and dancing, not sitting and contemplating in a room.

I feel like we didn't listen to the same tracks. A single musical idea? Don't go anywhere? LOL those tracks tell a story and are constantly evolving - something that makes it different from a boring to death ABACB arrangement. If you can't hear that, then there's not much help for you.BONES wrote: Tue Jun 14, 2022 10:25 am But to me they are both boring. I guess it's boring for you. Those and other Goa tracks were taking me on a different journey each one of them, when listened on headphones at home. I never needed to go to a party and/or take LSD or shrooms to 'enjoy' Goa. But these days I would need to take a lot of drugs to survive full PsyTrance night.rezoneight wrote: Tue Jun 14, 2022 12:16 pm Both of those Goa tracks are boring as hell to listen to

Just for giggles though I just did a quick listen to the full Twisted album. Interesting to hear bits of what would become Shpongle in there.

^this. It's a simple mono-synth with a Roland filter and a CEM oscillator. It can be used for any style where that makes sense.Echoes in the Attic wrote: Mon Jun 13, 2022 9:28 pmNah it's a techno machine, plus lots of other synth rock etc. E.g. Why people expect that it's going to be some really unique sonic experience is beyond me. They are great for live, as I've mentioned, and as is well demonstrated in the (non-goa) video that was posted earlier.
I think that the big win here might be that if it's a good Roland filter model and has an FM input then having that in the modular might give you some of the flavor of Roland System 100 modular.
Anyway, here's a six-pack of SH-101 with some TR-606.

What do you say about this one? It has a more progressive "story" arrangement than Astral Projectionrezoneight wrote: Tue Jun 14, 2022 1:20 pmYou don't have to guess. It's possible that it was made in Impulse Tracker (Erez Aizen was using it in his first tracks, but he could also have some equipment from DJ Jorg, who "discovered him around that time"). I loved to play it at open-air parties.

Yeah that's exactly what I said earlier. Though I don't know for sure if this is the case. Curious if anyone is familiar with the system-100 and will compare to the 101 modules in modular.ghettosynth wrote: Tue Jun 14, 2022 2:06 pm I think that the big win here might be that if it's a good Roland filter model and has an FM input then having that in the modular might give you some of the flavor of Roland System 100 modular.
On another note, my goodness I hate the straight cable lines with no contours. I find them very hard to follow.

Well, to be a bit more specific, I meant the System 100m, not the original System 100. In any case. the System 100m uses a filter built around four BA662 OTAs. This is, in essence, what is in the IR3109, which is the filter chip in the 101 (and in the Juno 6/60 among others). The original System 100, which is also a beast, uses a discrete diode ladder filter.Echoes in the Attic wrote: Tue Jun 14, 2022 3:18 pmYeah that's exactly what I said earlier. There are slight differences among the BA662 variant filters so it's unlikely that using the Softube module will convince the purists. YMMV and all that.

Ah ok. I think I was thinking of the 100m too. I'm not familiar, it was just "that old modular roland thing" in my head.ghettosynth wrote: Tue Jun 14, 2022 4:24 pmWell, to be a bit more specific, I meant the System 100m, not the original System 100.
