Seems to go often unmentioned, but the most exciting VoS release for me is Density (currently at version 3).

It's an amazing thickener/glue/mojo tool, been across the drum bus on every single thing I've released since I began using it (some time around ~2010, so like 10 or so albums & eps).

Highly recommended!

I put it on an acoustic drum track then compared it to other plate reverbs in my folder and epicPlate not only held its own against all others but exceeded the sound of Arturia's plate by a mile.

EpicVerb imparts a nice character and attitude to drum tracks although I haven't tested it on other material yet. I'm generally not a huge fan of plate reverbs put this one is certainly worth keeping around for special occasions.

Thanks to VOS for setting it free..... :tu:
I can see what you mean, for instance I dislike FerricTDS's character. It makes the sound thinner and brighter in not a good way in my opinion. Also, I always try using Density, I set it in a way that sounds nice, then I try other stuff and I just find that it sounds better. I never gelled with BootEQ, I have no use case for BaxterEQ, and NastyVCS says nothing to me. On the other hand, NastyDLA is fantastic, ThrillseekerXTC is great too and TesslaSE is really nice on bass. And FlavourMTC, a new addition, is also my favourite quasi-Pultec.

Have you tried the free Warmy EP1A Tube EQ ?

No, I haven't in fact! I'll try it out soon. But I must say that FlavourMTC does the low end trick better than the Pultec for electric bass in my opinion, since the cut is much better focused, and its resonant highpass is great on kick drums.

I've been reading the blog. What separates Bootsie from other developers is that:
1. He has years of experience, great ears and well developed analytical listening skills.
2. Has really good hardware gear and is intimately familiar with all the peculiarities/non linearities of it
3. Has a finely tuned listening environment.

Criticism of Bootsie's work is heresy. It's amazing that this stuff is all free. The only thing I could wish for is macOS M1. Someone donate him a Mac.

I've never been impressed with most of his plugins. I've found them to be more hype than substance. The recent EpicVerb being the lone exception.

I think that Variety of Sound (and Airwindows plugins) benefit greatly from the "emperor's new clothes" syndrome.

People are afraid to speak against them for fear of being labeled a heretic or having their ears/speakers/headphones/brains/ability ridiculed by fanatics.

That's not heresy that's just honesty....or just my honest opinion to be precise. But I realize other people have different opinions. That's fine since we all have different source material and it's quite possible some people will like a particular plugin and some won't.

Variety of Sound is a bit different from Airwindows. VoS, while probably overselling his stuff, does make some easy to use, well designed plugins. Of course, you still need to marry his idea of good sound. As I said, it doesn't always happen in my case.

Airwindows/Chris Johnson on the other hand is sort of a software Mike Matthews. Many of EHX's designs are quite crude. Many of Airwindows' plugins are quite crude. (In the latter case, I might add "and many are as simple as a fixed filter", eg. all the various Hypersonic/Ultrasonic plugins, Interstage, etc.). Both have some sort of an infectious enthusiasm. I find AW compressors basically unusable (if not for some very specific, lo-fi character) for example. There are quite a few plugins that I love (the X/Y/Z filters, ChromeOxide and IronOxide, his recent FireAmp, his tape delay, Capacitor2 with its non linearity control that does add some nice colour in moderation, FromTape, and many others). But while I have no qualms about using Variety of Sound plugins, I think the coding in AW plugins might be a little suspect (sometimes he readily admits so), the behaviour a bit destructive sometimes (for example, curve and Recurve have a bug that will cause weird discontinuities). Still, I do use his stuff because I like his sound aesthetic.

Yes, it's a common fretline I was inspired by. No wonder that it sounds similar.

Lol, just realized, those particular guitars are from samples... Sometimes I use ample and aas, but not this time.
