Wow, didn't know it was possible, but loud feedback synths (*cough* Prism) lead to my left speaker now rattling with mid-high volumes, it's a constant annoyance, gotta replace these headphones.

I'll have to make a VST for this at some point if FR is not filled soon. Oh wait, there must be a VST in existence already... anyone?

Man I am just having the loveliest time with MuLab. God Damn.

Edit: to explain the FR, user-definable dB limit for muting the master output, although the master output is not exactly set in stone in MuLab.

Hmm, perhaps false alarm. No, I think my headphones are actually broken.

I remember this happening in the past, my headphones would just start rattling sometimes for hours at a time and the next moment be fine for days. I still want to protect my ears tho. Ultimately I'd make a VST that detects loud high frequency amplitude and reduce the volume momentarily by a large amount, and if the frequencies are lower then it would reduce by less.

If by any chance you have long hair that is what may cause the rattling, you can clean the hairs with tweezers.
As for excessive output, wouldn't a brickwall limiter be sufficient for you?

Post

no, and actually there's a natural brickwall already in place, the limits of the computer's audio system. As a matter of fact, that is hit first before MuLab's 0dB. Well actually that's only because I'm not currently using a proper audio interface out of lazyness.

also high frequency ear-piercing tones are still a problem with a brickwall. I really wish I had a more active system to reduce volume, not just clamp it.

yes

I'm pretty sure auto-mute would be possible to make within MUX to be dropped onto master rack.

Here's an idea. The bit I forgot to include in the screenshot is mapping the CC63 to Mute parameter in the Mixer Strip.

NOTE: I've not tried this at all...

thanks! that's cool you can make that in MUX

That's funny....when I read the OP, I thought that some mux magic could accomplish auto mute. Cool for hi hat chokes too I guess.

Yeah, Architeuthis you need to start tweaking things, you are missing out!

Choking and auto-muting are different things, of course. We're talking about literal automated muting of an audio channel here, not emulating a cymbal choke (e.g. by switching from the "sustain" to the "release" phase of an envelope). I'd have to have a look at the sampler to check what's possible with the envelopes in terms of automation. (I generally use Sforzando.)

Actually they are quite similar concepts. Your mux could work as a Hi Hat choke. Maybe I have the wrong word. I am thinking of an open Hi hat and having the closed hi hat mute the open hat when played.

Yes, using the audio, I guess it could. I guess I'm thinking I'd only ever do choking with a MIDI set up...
