VIDEO - What are the differences between the different Melda Compressors

If you have a license for MModernCompressor, it's actually the easiest way to explore the psycho-acoustic detector. The control to activate it is front-facing in the interface. In MDynamics, it's 2 panels deep and easy to miss, being under the "settings" button in the Dynamic Detection module.

Just below the Attack and Release knobs, there's a "Mode" control that lets you instantly switch between 5 different flavors of detector, including "Psycho-acoustic."

MModern has some detector modes that I don't think are present in the other Meldaproduction compressors.

The documentation explains them as follows:

Super-smooth mode enables spectral smoothing which may significantly reduce distortion especially for very low attack values.
Super-fast mode activates very fast attack/release shapes, hence it reduces any pumping effect at the cost of higher distortion.
Super-fast attack mode is similar, however it also ensures the level will never go below the threshold, which ensures the compressor will react as quickly as possible.
Psycho-acoustic mode enables pre-filtering, which makes the compressor react to the signal in a way which resembles the way we hear it.

MModernCompressor gets the least love of the Meldaproduction compressors. People see the "Level Distribution" display and the Auto-compression controls and glaze over, but it has its charms. It's faster and more straightforward to set up than MDynamics and it has the Dry/Wet control that MCompressor lacks. It also has an MEQualizer-style 6-band filter for the detector.

Its biggest drawback is that it lacks the awesome processing shape meter that MDynamics and MCompressor have. If it had that, it would be my #1 go-to compressor.

Totally agree about the Level Distribution control/display - way cool. Also totally agree that lack of the Shape Meter is a big shame. I never noticed the Mode control before (hey, it's Melda ... so there's always something you didn't notice before).

The reason I dug into MModernCompressor's features is that it was the first Meldaproduction plug-in I bought after I got a license transfer for the FreeFX bundle. I really liked MCompressor and wanted an upgrade. Then I found out that MModernCompressor lacks multiple features that MCompressor has. Most of all the shape display.

What I wanted was MCompressor with more features (and I still think there's a place a compressor like that in the line). The "auto-compression" feature isn't useful for my applications. Even though I understand it better, I don't know what kind of program material it's meant for.
