MSF: Anything else I can do to get rid of clicks when notes overlap? (code provided)

The code provided is for a kick/808 combo instrument. Since the Kick masks the clicking somewhat, I've disabled it so only the 808 sounds.

I have it set to monophonic and "smooth", but there are still clearly audible clicks when one note starts before another is finished. Also due to the filtering (bandpass module), I've tried different settings for "filter follow mono" in Globals -> Advanced -> Voicing. This appears to have no effect on the clicks, though, so it appears to be a simple monophonic mode issue.

Is there something else I'm missing that will provide more of a smooth zero-crossing type note transition instead of the clicks?

I've been struggling with this for a very long time, fiddling with all the options, reduces the issue a lot, but it is never perfect or consistent. I hope someone would have some kind of solution, but I ended up believing that it is not something achievable with MSF.

Well, if it can't get significantly better than this, I'll have to abandon the instrument and recreate it in a track stack using other vst's which would be a shame since it's MXXX's pitch tracking bandpass filter that inspired the patch. I'm not really aware of another MIDI controlled filter I could use for similar effect with 120dB/octave slope.

Which other options besides mono/smooth could I be trying?

You can try sending your issue to info@meldaproduction. I've also felt like the voicing options in MSF are not fully fleshed out.

Which is really a shame. MSF / MXXX are SOOOO close to being the tools I would use for everything, but there are just a few things that make them lose every time I A/B them with another option.

Filters is a big one. The filters in something like Dune just sound so much better. As much as I like the extensibility and workflow of MXXX, at the end of the day, the audience only hears the end result, so every time I A/B it as a synth, it loses.

Clicks I can't get rid of is another non-starter... even though it's got just about every other possible advantage. In the end, I just can't have the clicks.

I don't mean that as a complaint so much as a head-scratcher that the vast majority of the work is already done and in place, so it seems like just a few well placed tweaks would take it from a powerful curiosity to something I can actually use time and time again. As it stands, nearly nothing I create in MXXX / MSF ever sees the light of day because of the same few issues each time.

I had issues with the clicks before in another patch, but chalked it up at the time to my not understanding the options well enough. I'm ready, willing, and able to spend the time if that's still the case and this can be fixed.

It won't even load for me. Maybe its because I'm on the new beta, but its crashing. Is there anything in the generator section or is it all in the FX section?

Have you tried Polyphonic mode with 1 max note?

I'm on the beta too. It's possible that's my fault. I vaguely remembered from a few years back that if I post patches on here, I have to delete whatever the symbol is that appears at the end of the clipboard string, or the patch won't load for other people. I did that, and assuming I needed to, but will try when I get back in front of that machine to load it back in either way and see if that's to blame for the patch not loading for you.

Oscillators feeding bandpass filters into envelopes in generator section. (I need the kick and 808 oscillators to have different envelopes, so it was either this setup or two MSF modules in MXXX)

It's possible that the envelope is causing click in this case. The 808 oscillator has it's envelope dead silent for the first 40ms or so, then ramps up quickly. It's possible clicks in this case are not a note coming ON, but rather the outgoing note going OFF instantaneously as the new envelope is triggered and starting with silence.

I thought of that possiblity too (though I haven't tested for it specifically yet), but have tried every combo I could think of regarding envelope options to smooth out considering I do need full retrigger per note to not lose the kick impact.

Please send your reports to the email. Vojtech said he doesn't read all the threads. You have good ideas so try to include some kind of video or image to make it as clear as possible. This is what I did and some issues got fixed in this beta (haven't checked actually but it's in the changelog).

I also had to switch to another synth. MSF is awesome but I kept hitting obstacles. Like you, I consider my own responsibility but two geniuses can't be wrong :)

Also, it's not complaining if you paid - it's feedback. I'll say it's complaining if you don't deliver a high-quality feature request, though :clown:

That's because you are using Envelope module INSIDE the Generator to apply one more envelope (why???).
