I think the steam deck would be good for making music, provided the software was configured for it correctly.(i.e. mouseless/controller based). Its way more powerful than a MPC and half the cost of a MPC live which is pretty low spec(2GB of RAM) . The base version of the steam deck is about $400 but the performance is about that of a mid-grade laptop which would cost you at least $700 if not more. Sounds like a deal to me. Add a small portable midi controller and I think it would be a pretty fun portable setup.

I think tracktion waveform would be a good candidate for use on the Steam Deck. It already has a Linux version and can run on lower spec computers (runs on Raspberry Pi) so it's probably more optimized. Plus, it's much more configurable than most DAWs with a javascriptAPI for macros and keyboard shortcuts. If we could pair that with the steam decks on-board button configuration. We could have a pretty good interface.

Next up: DAW's on a pregnancy test.

It is. :)

Well, I could imagine such a device or a tablet as a controller. But, running a full DAW on such a tiny screen? Nope, that's not for me.

Especially also considering the processing power of the device.

Since receiving my Deck a couple weeks ago, there has not been a single moment when I considered using it for music production. I could probably get Renoise working on it, but I already have that set up on machines with attached mice, keyboards, and higher-res displays.

This device is built for games. I might put work into running non-Steam software, but it will still be a game.

I stand by my post from page 1 of this thread.
I hate signatures too.

The processing power is actually pretty good imo. And like I've written before you can always just connect it to a dongle and have a mouse, keyboard, presumably audio device, and monitor all ready to go. Is this the ideal device for that, probably not but there is nothing stopping you from doing it if you wish. The device is a laptop with dedicated gaming controls after all. Like I wouldn't use the SteamOS desktop mode without an external monitor anyway as the experience is not great on the small screen.

The other big issue for me with the desktop experience is that right now Valve is putting all their resources into the SteamOS part of things so the desktop side is a little buggy with some pretty outdated software.

Here is an article about it, with a few benchmark results (note that it uses the internal screen, which means that the resolution is 1280x800, which isn't exactly much): https://www.tomshardware.com/news/windo ... ce-testing

I would say it's about on the same level as a current lower mid tier laptop with a dedicated graphics chip. I.e., it doesn't have a lot of processing power. Well, no surprise, considering that you can already get it for about 420 €. (For comparison, my old Intel Xeon E3-1230 v3 from 2013 in my former desktop PC, coupled with a GTX 1060 got the same frame rates on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, in full HD resolution, not 1280x800.)

I like Steam, and I like the idea, but, gotta stay realistic about what's possible for the money.

I actually bought an iPad pro and a lot of apps and peripherals like a bluetooth MIDI keyboard and whatnot thinking I would be using that "on the road" a lot.... ends up the iPad gets just used as a regular tablet. Money well spent... not so much
