Soft Synths, MIDI Controller: How to make it work?

I have:
Firewire Audiophile 4in/6outs
Evolution MK-449C MIDI Keyboard Controller
Latest Tracktion using Mac 10.3.6

Now,the setup is a cinch with this great user friendly app. What I want to do is record a drum rhythm using Groove Agent. How does one do this? I can't just drop a filter onto a track. It won't allow me.
If I pick MIDI track, I get a warning that the output will not be heard, but when I press on the controller keyboard I can visually see a signal via meters, but no audible sound.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
