Hello fellow musicians

I was considering MSoundFactory mainly because I am looking for an NI Kontakt alternative: big sampler with lots of features. I like tinkering with samples.

So it's nice that MSoundFactory comes with lots of other sound generators on top. But I was told that Meldas frequency filters would not hold up against the like of TAL, Synapse Audio, Cytomics and even u-he. Especially when it comes to high resonance and audio rate modulation. And it still lacks granular synthesis and there is no sample slicer to slice up some beats.

I demo it right now, but it's a complex beast. I would like to know from experienced users of MSoundFactory: did Melda finally update thier filter algorithms to keep up with other companies? What do you think of the filter sound in MSoundFactory?

The short and incomplete answer to your question is: No.

BUT, this is a misconception regarding what MSoundFactory is and does.

You can try TurboEQ. And, never listen to people regarding their opinions on comparisons of different synths. It's never useful and always misleading. Especially when they compare to something like MSoundFactory. The fact that these people even "compared" MSF to those other plugins outright tells me they have no business lecturing on how MSF compares to other plugins.

That is not because Melda hasn't "caught up" or "update" their filter algorithms, nor because Melda is the best and only synth that is ever worth buying and using. Rather, it is because it has a completely different philosophy on working with sounds. It emphasizes control and manipulation of parameters over preset/algorithms that sound familiar/popular.

MSoundFactory has this filter called "TurboFilter". To someone who has the time and knowledge to customize filter algorithms to their own liking, Melda absolutely surpasses all these other plugin devs you mentioned. However, this is where practicality and reality work against Melda. The simple truth is that just about everyone does not have such time or knowledge to customize filter algorithms. There are other examples of such cases within MSoundFactory: TurboComp and TurboReverb. Once you try the LE versions of these, you'll know why these "Turbo" plugins are actually amazing.

Since MSoundFactory is so powerful, you can't just look at its filter module alone for comparison. Having so much capability, MSF has to spread its features across several modules. It slows down workflow, but gives incredible potential. Although it doesn't have similar filters of other popular plugins, it has things other plugins cannot do at all. In fact, most people who dont use MSF don't even know about or have ever imagined the existence of these options. MSF has so many stuff in there that I can guarantee there is something that more than sufficiently makes up for the filters. But, you need to know how to achieve that yourself.

MSoundFactory is extremely complex and thus can't afford the same workflow of other popular plugins. A direct feature-to-feature comparison isn't fair because MSF would lose against any other popular synth if you compare like so. If you compare the entirety of MSF with other plugins by absolute sound-design potential, the only thing that trumps MSF is becoming a software engineer yourself and coding the sounds. It might seem at first glance that certain parts are "lacking" within MSF, but the reason is because MSF instead wants to give you maximum control over as many things as possible. It's essentially the "cost" to having such incredible control over every parameter.

I was more into sampling way back than I am now. So, not even simple to use samplers has gotten me back - yet. I can't say much about "tinkering" with sampling in MSF. Overall, MSF is incredibly deep and feature packed. I couldn't believe it when I looked into it and had to query support if everything that seemed to be included actually was and what the catch was - it's absolute insane value!. Not far from everything Melda has done is in there!

And the sound quality absolutely floored me (and continues to do so)! I find it hard to use anything else now, lol. But I do, for specific purposes of course, but firing up MSF is something of a routine now. :) I didn't know, or could have guessed these things before digging into it really.

The (beta) piano instrument Meldway is a huge leap up from the Monastery Grand. I foresee amazing new instrument additions moving forward - at no added cost (what I understand).

Maybe Waves CR8 is the way to go, to quickly tinker with stuff, but if depth and ultimate sound quality is your thing, MSF is a great choice. I hope others, more experienced with the sampler specifically chimes in too.

As of now, it appears to me, since Kontakt is so mature, it may have the upper hand in many cases. Still... Melda has unique ways of going about things, and I suspect it may over time blow the competition out of the water. CPU efficiency often baffles me for one.

I personally love the filters, but don't try to do what other synths do (I use Cherry Audio where it's appropriate as an example). The filters sound "luxuriously Melda" to me.

I think they're overly focused on features and the sound quality is suffering. I see this in many areas of their implementations. For some FX/instruments it does not matter, for some it does.

I would really like to see them go back in and refine their core DSP engine.

Mac support is begrudging, and it shows.

Yupp, I see the text box in TurboFilter where you can enter something like a script of sorts? How does that work? Am I supposed to code my own tasty filter algorithms? Did someone already do that and can supply some delicious analogue modelled lines of filter code?

Yes, the filters are not anything special compared to those other plugins. It's just "correctly working" is how I'd describe it. MSF filters don't have simple options to add much unique character/bite/color to the sound as those other plugins can have. This can be either good or bad. Good because despite sounding meh, MSF filters give so so so much more options for you to tweak around and customize. Bad because you need to take time tweaking small things here and there until it sounds right to you.

If you look deeper into the modules, you should be able to figure out how to chain multiple modules together to create satisfying sounds. This takes a lot of hours to learn though, but feels rewarding because you've done that yourself. With other plugins, it's just a click or two away to get a different cool filter sound. However, if you take the time to learn MSF, you will have way more options than other synths.

The modulation and routing are outstanding in MSF. Those other plugins don't compare, in theory... But again, these things are too nuanced to compare directly and the added MSF modulation capability isn't always necessary. Simple workflow in other plugins sufficiently works for 95% of the cases, whereas MSF workflow is ALWAYS slow but can achieve that 5% that other plugins can't.

Routing + modulation and good built-in sounding filters are SOMEWHAT mutually exclusive. Examples (that I know) where synths have BOTH great modulation/routing and cool filter options would be:

- Has audio rate and cross oscillator modulation: U-He Zebra, Bazille, Ace, Synapse Dune 3, Reveal Sound Spire, TAL MOD. (and presumably emulations of rack-style modular synths)

- No audio rate mod: UVI Falcon, VPS Avenger

- Phase plant has audio rate and cross oscillator modulation but the filters arent anything special; Phase Plant is very similar to MSF's philosophy.

If you also care about routing management, then it would be: Zebra, Falcon, Phase Plant, Avenger.

However, none of these have the same modulation and customization capabilities MSF has. BUT, do you really need all that modulation to achieve a WIIIIIIIIDE variety of sounds? No, because other synths can also use fx chains, just like MSF, to cover for whatever they might lack in one particular fx module. Would it be cool to have the customization of filters that MSF offers? Sure, but it is no way necessary.

So, modulation/routing capability and good built-in filters are somewhat mutually exclusive if you take MSF as an example. But I've listed several synths that can do 99% of the stuff you need filters to do. For those 99%, MSF is relatively slow because it needs you to tweak/modulate the parameters yourself to achieve that 99%. However, MSF can do that extra 1% with its extreme customizability.

In my humble and limited experience, I would RECOMMEND getting MSF if MSF can spark even a small bit of interest in you. But do try it or watch videos of it. It's 50% OFF right now. I dont know how much longer the sale is.

yes, you code in stuff, but it's not a full IDE where you write a code for filter from scratch. I don't know about stuff people posted for analog filter emulation. I dont think it works that way. If you want analog sounds, figure out the custom wave shapes to use, apply the "Analog" mode and adjust drift amounts, use some noise samples.

Then, look at the guide by clicking the ? icon under TurboFiter -> Algorithm. The bottom has Nonlinear Processing, which should help with emulating analog filters.

Use other fx within MSF as well, like Saturator, Waveshaper, Amp, Compressor to further tweak the sound.

Actually, yes, we have the SVF filters now, if you refer to sample rate modulation. These are available via the FilterFast module. And the TurboFilter module, which is still in beta phase, but some preset making action is about to be conducted ;). PLus there will be some distortion algos in it, so... the rest is for our imagination ;)

Filters sound "good", "bad" or "different" from one another mostly due to a few things. Such as the amount of resonance across the frequency range, the level over the frequency range, and the amount/type of distortion when driving it. Typically this is already decided for you with most (non Melda) filters, you simply turn the frequency/cutoff knob and decide if you like the way it sounds. In Melda all the options are there to make the filters sound however you like and trust me they can stand up to the best analog filters (I have them in my studio and have compared them). As Vojtech said TurboFilter will soon have presets to do all the hard work for you. This way you can simply choose a filter that sounds good on the sound you are using. In short, Melda's filters have an exceptional sound quality and there will be MANY more options (with the completion of TurboFilter) to quickly load and compare filters with different characteristics.

Ok, I went completely overboard with this pad preset I just doodled with - and it's not even a great example - but to make a point; You can do so much (on the generator level) BEFORE the filter, to have it respond differently, then WITHIN the filter, then AFTER. I have years left to explore the combinations and I won't be done then either, lol. :D

It's a nice one. Like a very basic, but powerful version of MSF. Guess for Jmg8 it would be a no brainer to rebuild it entirely :D
