Is there any specific name for this electronica drum beat?

Hi. I'm trying to write ambient pop like Sleep by Conjure One and I'm struggling with the drums part. I know it's a common beat in the electronica genre (sounds a lot like many of William Orbit's stuff), but search for "electronica drums" or "ambient drums" doesn't bring anything like it. Is there any specific name for this kind of mid-tempo drum beat? Thanks!

I’d call this type of drum groove an offbeat groove. Breakbeats are a genre that use these types of offbeat grooves at a faster tempo. Lo-fi also uses them at slower tempos.

The idea is your kick isn’t “four-on-the-floor” syncopated on every downbeat of a 4/4 time signature, i.e. it’s “off the downbeat”

Searching YouTube for “Offbeat drum grooves” gives mostly acoustic drums vs software/DAW-based, but the concept is the same. You’d probably have to search for something more common like lo-fi, breakbeats, etc.

In this video at 1:19, the drummer plays at a lower tempo and kinda sounds like the groove in the video you linked:

Thanks! I knew breakbeat superficially, but I assumed it was limited to sampling drums rather than translating the groove to electronic ones.

I used to just pick "Drum and Bass" loops from Reason library and just change tempo to 90-100 instead of 160-170 and the result was always this nice downtempo beat.

So OP, just look for drum&bass loops and pitch them down , or if they are Rex files, just change tempo.

Those are a couple examples of common sample source breakbeats, but there's 100's of other examples too. Breakbeats can also be programmed, they don't need to be sampled.

It looks like a really good reference to different grooves or things to try out. Anyway don't thank me, I just came across it as I was looking for a link to what I would say was the base pattern...

I'd have said that this was the kick snare for 16 steps, with hh to taste.
