Yep, there are a now a good bunch of Bitwig licenses on Knobcloud (and other plugin selling places..). I've never seen that before. Not surprising, I really think Bitwig have messed up big time. After 3 years, I'm now pretty sure I'm going to sell up.

It's a shame as Bitwig is a good product and fun to use ... but this move means that having access to the full functionality of Bitwig will be extremely expensive. It also means that I can't trust Bitwig and so paying any upgrade/maintenance/subscription fee means nothing - I have no idea what I'll actually get.

Genuine question for fellow Bitwig (ex?)users - which DAW would/will you move to?

i use fl studio because all updates are free
they have addons but it is clear that addos coste something

not as bitwig :)
what come next pay for presents ?
i swear in the future we must pay for presets ;)

Renoise. No piano roll. Updates every 9 years or so.

They're splitters, but without inserting any effects in the chain at all you can still change the levels and panning, which can result in pretty radical transformations in some cases.

That’s cool though - it basically converts the whole DAW into a more flexible Physion type thing - but I wish these were grid modules too

Please buy my bitwig away from me. I'll sell for $160. I listed for $170, but I'll do $160 here.

It's hard to vote with my money when I am paid up for a year.

I wish I could force a refund on my recent update. I would do that today.

"Disappointment " is not the appropriate word. I feel cheated. I was ok about upgrade plan but this??? Wtf????

This is the first time that I have the feeling that Bitwig isn't quite the cool company I thought they were.

100% agree

I too was surprised to see an add-on, but not quite as enraged as others. Nothing has been taken away, I just don’t something that I didn’t know existed yesterday. I fully agree that the messaging around the upgrade plan does conflict with these add-one being extra cost. But I think the reason for that is that we are used to them releasing new devices as an upgrade to the program.

As someone who has never really been much into the built-in devices, I think it’s not such a bad idea to have two separate streams where you pay for an upgrade (plus a year of updates) for core program improvements and then having separate development and funding for extra devices. The problem is that they promise a lot early probably before they figure out what is feasible financially.

If you step back and compare what we’ve gotten in the core product in terms of instruments and effects compared to something like Ableton where most instruments and some effects are add-ones, it’s actually quite generous what we’ve gotten so far. The sampler for example is quite extensive, and obviously the grid is a massively flexible modular environment, both of which probably would have been add-ons with many other products.

So I think it’s worth stepping back to look at what you actually get if you buy Bitwig and remembering that you are never forced to upgrade until there is something you really want. You never have to trust that you will get unknown cool stuff over the year because you can wait until there is enough stuff there that you want. If they don’t provide enough new features then they don’t get money until they do. This should be how people approach it. I think people have a right to surprised and disappointed by this but a little perspective maybe can help. Worth giving up what you and jumping to another daw who don’t give you as much? I doubt it.

No company wants this kind of backlash. I feel kinda bad for them. May not have been the smartest pricing structure even though it’s still obviously pretty good value. I doubt it’s greed, it’s like reassessing whats needed to survive, we don’t know. But overall I’d say Bitwig is still quite good value. And I haven’t been thrilled with updates lately but again, I would buy the upgrade plan until there is something I want. Currently the application is pretty great.

A day to remember.

Right! Every time I mention to someone I use bitwig they say ‘what’s that’? Whenever anyone lists the best daws or favorite daws bitwig is always missing from the list. Not many tutorials when you are trying to figure out how to do something. Whenever new hardware or daw controllers come out bitwig is not supported. They are playing with fire here if they lose the people that actually know about them and put up with the drawbacks of using a daw with a small user base.

I just bought bitwig about a month ago and I'm already gonna jump right off. I could get the "pay for a year of upgrades" but this is too much for me cuz while I appreciate bitwig's built-in features, I don't need this specific DAW to make music. I value my trust on the company the most, and I just lost it right now. It was already hard to convince me and other new users about the "subscription" model they had, but now I doubt anyone is gonna get excited to buy the software knowing the recent news. This practice isn't even legal here where I live, the statement "12 Months of Free Upgrades Future-proof: All Bitwig Studio updates in the following 12 months are FREE." is considered "false advertising" and it's against customer protection laws. They shoot themselves on their foot with this decision and I'm going back to Ableton. It was good while it lasted and I hope I can get my money back.

Extremely lame move from Bitwig, no two ways about it.

I, like many others here have, year on year, dutifully handed over our upgrade plan fees and kept our purchase up to date.

It should be kept in mind that we handed over that money IN ADVANCE, with no knowledge or specific expectation of what would be delivered in the following year.

For current upgrade plan owners, there is absolutely no way to avoid the impression that Bitwig have STOLEN these addons from them. It seems like straight-up theft - and from the people who had the good faith to pay in advance without knowing what they would be getting.

Meanwhile, Bitwig say on their Facebook thread:
Regular updates for Bitwig Studio will still happen and will not be affected at all by add-on development.
Well, I'm sorry, but you're going to find it impossible to convince your customers that is a truthful statement - for the so-called addon announced today or for whatever "cool stuff" you arbitrarily decide paying subscribers don't deserve to get in the future.
