So not emotional at all, in my opinion. The substance of the back and forth has been very interesting, and that’s why I’ve been posting. But I don’t know why a third of this thread has to be people complaining about consulting adults trying to have a discussion, and telling us we’re wrong to have the discussion because they like bitwig - that’s the super annoying noise part
Cool .. yea I agree some of the points raised have been interesting .. but as for the third of the thread bit, by definition shouldn't a discussion involve giving a listen to all sides? Like I'd said in another post, when ppl are riled up or sensitive they tend to strongly disagree or dismiss other viewpoints some of which may be valid too. Just getting super annoyed with something or dismissing it as noise because it doesn't agree with one's own viewpoint is in a way a fundamental part of the problem that leads to situations like this week long saga. In my experience being overly polarized one way or another undermines more than leads to constructive discussion.

Anyway all's well that ends well. While I'm sure that this will only encourage some that went into panic mode from declaring victory (as I think some already have), I'm also certain this could have been done more peacefully, and without the ridiculous threats or claims of altruism and "support" thrown around.

The rectified the issue and there is nothing else that needs to be said imo. They can now figure out other ways to make more revenue without messing with what users paid for.

Hopefully this is the last and only round of a failed attempt at abusing Bitwig users.

From now on, only time will tell if this is all just a preparation for another round or if this is indeed a sincere realization and apology of a mistake.

I'm yet convinced that a company who does this once won't ever do it again in an even more covert manner. Of course there is the possibility of just simply making a mistake that they sincerely regret... Nonetheless, some of my suspicion still lingers, and I hope that Bitwig proves me wrong.

Until then, I will remain cautious.

I guess they might roll their own plugins (clap obviously, and probably vst/au) though if I understand correctly clap format plugins can easily be wrapped into those formats. Something that probably qualifies as not strictly a part of bitwig studio updates or devices, though hopefully still with some integration.

The outcome is definitely a good move for the community but also raises some questions. I think there had been a good reason for Bitwig for the add-ons and the reason is most probably not greed. I think they wanted to gain a new revenue stream to grow their business and develop Bitwig faster. I think they should still pursue this goal but stick their heads together and develop a better model to fuel their growth. Why not adding a marketplace into Bitwig, probably partner up with content creators to put up their presets and templates. Get plugin makers on it to sell their Claps.

They took their time, but they did the right thing. I still think a simple "We heard you, but give us a few days to come up with a solution" would have gone a long way last week, but this is such a clear and simple message that they came out now, I can only encourage everyone to let this go.

It would actually be pretty cool if Bitwig started making VSTs for other DAWs. I wouldn't mind that at all. If they did some work on Grid (allow custom GUI for example) they could package that up and sell it as a VST. They certainly have cool sound design ideas, I'm sure they have a plugin or two they could make and sell to make revenue with. Like I've wrote before there is so much more they could be doing if revenue is an issue. Just selling a DAW is no longer enough. Even Ableton no longer just sells a DAW, they sell PUSH, they have certification programs, they have sound packs (a lot of sound packs), they own Cycling so they sell Max MSP licenses too. At some point you have to look outside of your core business if you want to grow.

+1

There was a serious sh**storm going on, made of tons of bullcrap. In the end, they took it seriously. This is what I hoped for, so I'm quite happy. And having a passionate community around has its advantages.

What I think they can or will do is offer add-ons (modules, sample instruments, soundpacks, something special, bitwiggy) with partners. This works just fine with Applied Acoustics Systems (soundpacks), Ableton (third-party packages) or Reason (third-party REs besides their own), and I think this can bring in extra cash without hurting anybody's feelings. I am really willing to pay some bucks for a handful of premium Polarity devices or curated presets and sounds in the style of the NI Maschine Expansions, only for Bitwig. But the business model should be the right one.

I hope that 4.5 is released soon, otherwise it is going to seem that the spectral suite really was content that was originally going to be 4.4 anyway (which is still my suspicion), given the length of time since 4.3.
I hope that they kee pto there word, and do not split development resources away from Bitwig Studio itself.
Also, I hope it's release wasn't help up with internal discussions about launching as seperate plugins, as my plan ended on 30th Sept, right before this all exploded.

Plugins for other DAW's is such a time suck though... the DSP part is easy and only a small percentage of the development time. GUI's take more time than DSP... and then all the effort needed to deal with all the idiosyncrasies of the different DAW's and plugin formats and platforms.

I really hope that Bitwig does not try to sell plugins.

They should sell sound packs Like Ableton- No one expects them to be included and they are often 3rd party (often mapped sample packs but with rack fx, clips etc), the packs I have for Live (practically the sample logic stuff) is often what keeps me going back...
X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

it was just a suggestion. If revenue is really an issue they should be looking at all avenues to grow, even if its a time suck plugins can bring a decent amount of revenue. Waves for example has a very similar update plan to Bitwig for their plugin (a maintenance plan) that could be a source of revenue right there. I'm shooting ideas out there to make a point that the path they took with add-ons doesn't really make sense imo. It was like the laziest way to add revenue when there is so much low hanging fruit they could have picked.

At least now the collaboration idea is alive again. More add on devices that are baked into the core application would have been a nightmare in a session where every participant has a different license package or tier. Now all are again on the same page when starting a collaboration - whenever that feature is coming.

True, though it's possible they already considered this option prior to announcing the spectral suite and decided it was not viable atm. They may have wanted to see how it did and possibly hire more staff to handle the plugin side of things if/when revenue grew.

Really, you all are just fine now? Bitwig may have failed to rob me of my money this time, but they still robbed me of my joy in using bitwig. I won’t ever be going back.
