Oy, there's a bit of an overstatement. No need for a flame war here, but what Bowie is best at is "chameleon". There's a female performer who's been around for a while now who's n the same league, but I won't get you all hot-n-bothered by metioning her name here.... because then it *would* start a flame war.

As far as pure musical talent, there are plenty of folks who have it all over Dave. But, he's a *performer*, and always has been... nothing wrong with that, and I'm not dissing him. I'm just arguing with the opinion that he's "the best alive". Sure, it's an opinion, and we all have one. Good luck with it. ;)

BTW, MelodyMan... is that you, Dave?? :P

FLAME WAR IS ON BITCH :D

Just kidding. However, Bowie has everyone beat in versatility. He grabs a genre, makes it his own, and then abandons it before the cheap imitators get wise. He started out with great folky music, then changed rock and roll forever, quickly moved to rock opera, then plastic soul music, dark shades of early electronica with Eno, pretty much started cheesy 80's pop (we'll forgive him, though). Then jazz (black tie), then industrial. Even when he did drum n bass, he twisted it into a sound that can be summed up as "drum n Bowie", then quickly moved on. Sure there's more talented people in each genre, but put it all together and I don't think it's an overstatement to call him the most talented man in the realm of "all music".

That female chameleon you mention, however, pretty much made the same type of music for years, most of it written by other songwriters, before outsourcing famous electronic artists to write her stuff. Most definitely not in the same league, if I do say so.

So I guess you've never heard of Prince Rogers Nelson. Pitty, because you're missing out.

I actually think David Bowies is a great performer and a great entertainer, got a great plastic surgeon and is great at pretending to be a teenager in a half-life crisis.

However I find his tunes rather dull and unoriginal. So allow me to add some Diesel to this thread:

Quincy Jones
Mozart
Stevie Wonder
Prince
ABBA
Bee Gees

All miles ahead in song writing - and none of them needed surgery to stay cool. Well... Maybe Prince...

: )

So how bout it?

neil young?

just listening back these days to Bowie and Neil Young, I love both, as Prince and Stevie Wonder,

but all on them IMHO have had their climax in writing songs then just went down

Interesting perception with the peak and climax dilemma. I totally agree that almost any artist have a peak point and then they start sliding downwards.

Madonna (if one dares to call her an artist) is one of the few persons that seem to re-innovate her image. I am pretty sure that she won't do anything better then her peak-point (Ray of Light), but who knows...

The only one (Bowie, Prince, Wonder, Jones, Mozart) who actually got better with time was Mozart. He wrotes his best shit, when he was sick and dying.

While we are at it...

Lets not forget ex-porn star, Sabrina: "Boyz, Boyz, Boyz" - she never went downwards. She gave her contribution to mankind in one, genius work of a song.

"...Boys Boys Boys
I'm looking for a good time
Boys Boys Boys
Get ready for my love
Boys Boys Boys
I'm looking for a good time
Boys Boys Boys
I'm ready for your love..."

Might sound banale... But jug-mother was right.

mozart?
no.

I'd accept Bach, Beethoven or Stravinsky but not Mozart.
