Funny how I see the same type of thread on hardware forums too. Apparently all music production is dead. We had a good run folks, but it's time to go back to a world of monotonous silence.

Some people just start topics to be seen. Maybe we’re running out of serious things to talk about
I wonder what happens if I press this button...

Innovation comes in waves.

Looking back at 10+ year old plugins (instruments and effects), I'm amazed at how much plugins have generally evolved. A lot of it does come from increased computing power, but there's been a fair amount of innovation as well.

I expect that process to continue, and years down the line the market will continue to be pretty healthy, and we'll still be debating whether "the end is near".

No, it is a serious topic. Many virtual instruments are made by small companies and they have limited resources. If the market is saturated and people are turning more to hardware, there is a very real chance that many of these companies will fold and a lot of these plugins will no longer work (given the authorization schemes in use).

That is not to say that virtual instruments will die off entirely. I am sure that a lot of that market will end up being SAS and you will buy a subscription to use them. Also, many people are making great music with the instruments in their DAWs these days with the addition of samples, loops, and online services like Splice and Output.

VST3 adoption has been glacial, and there's arguments to be made (CLAP taking it beyond just an argument) that this whole area has caused market damage. Pretty much everyone (still updating products) is now making the move though, so it's not actually glacial by this point. Unfortunately most are wrapping VST2 products or aren't implementing many of the supposed advantages of VST3. (I mostly just want them to switch CPU use off, when idle, reliably!!) So it's a very hollow victory for Steinberg, which required piggy-backing on Apple's transition to even get that. They'll have earned the CLAP slap if CLAP manages to succeed.
Steinberg has been a big downer for plugins... they suck as a steward for an industry standard and VST3 has been a near disaster.

I'm glad CLAP came along and its pleasing to hear that Arturia is likely going CLAP.

CLAP is certainly getting traction. I think it is the best thing that happened to plugins in a long time:

And there are even more people using hybrid systems with external synths and plugins.
